  • Envelope stress responses (ESRs) help bacteria detect and manage disturbances in their protective barrier, especially during stressful conditions like infection.
  • The review focuses on specific ESRs, particularly σ- and Cpx-regulated responses, and their importance in the virulence of various pathogenic bacteria.

Article Abstract

The Gram-negative bacterial envelope is an essential interface between the intracellular and harsh extracellular environment. Envelope stress responses (ESRs) are crucial to the maintenance of this barrier and function to detect and respond to perturbations in the envelope, caused by environmental stresses. Pathogenic bacteria are exposed to an array of challenging and stressful conditions during their lifecycle and, in particular, during infection of a host. As such, maintenance of envelope homeostasis is essential to their ability to successfully cause infection. This review will discuss our current understanding of the σ- and Cpx-regulated ESRs, with a specific focus on their role in the virulence of a number of model pathogens.

Carbapenems are last-resort antibiotics for treating bacterial infections. The widespread acquisition of metallo-β-lactamases, such as VIM-2, contributes to the emergence of carbapenem-resistant pathogens, and currently, no metallo-β-lactamase inhibitors are available in the clinic. Here we show that bacteria expressing VIM-2 have impaired growth in zinc-deprived environments, including human serum and murine infection models.

In-situ stress plays a pivotal role in influencing the desorption, adsorption, and transportation of coalbed methane. The reservoir gas content represents a pivotal physical parameter, encapsulating both the coalbed methane enrichment capacity and the underlying enrichment law of the reservoir. This investigation collates, computes, and consolidates data concerning pore pressure, breakdown pressure, closure pressure, triaxial principal stress, gas content, lateral pressure coefficient, and other pertinent variables from coal reservoirs within several coal-bearing synclines in the Liupanshui coalfield, China.

Unlabelled: Many species of proteobacterial methane-consuming bacteria (methanotrophs) form a hauberk-like envelope represented by a surface (S-) layer protein (SLP) matrix. While several proteins were predicted to be associated with the cell surface, the composition and function of the hauberk matrix remained elusive. Here, we report the identification of the genes encoding the hauberk-forming proteins in two gamma-proteobacterial (Type I) methanotrophs, 5GB1 (EQU24_15540) and 20Z (MEALZ_0971 and MEALZ_0972).

The rapid spread of antimicrobial resistance poses a critical threat to global health and the environment. Antimicrobial nanomaterials, including silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), are being explored as innovative solutions; however, the emergence of nanoresistance challenges their effectiveness. Understanding resistance mechanisms is essential for developing antievolutionary strategies.

Under confining pressure, rocks transition from brittle failure to plastic failure, and residual strength exists after complete failure. However, in the process of establishing rock damage constitutive models, the strength criteria used usually do not consider residual stress. In cold region engineering, the freeze-thaw effect caused by temperature changes should be considered in the constitutive model, and strength criteria should also be introduced.
