Sarcopenia, which diminishes lifespan and healthspan in the elderly, is commonly exacerbated by viral pneumonia, including influenza and COVID-19. In a study of influenza A pneumonia in mice, young mice fully recovered from sarcopenia, while older mice did not. We identified a population of tissue-resident skeletal muscle macrophages that form a spatial niche with satellite cells and myofibers in young mice but are lost with age.

Effect of reserve protection level and governance on tree cover loss and gain.

Conserv Biol

January 2025

School of Geography, Planning, and Spatial Sciences, University of Tasmania, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

Terrestrial protected areas are essential for biodiversity conservation, yet it is not fully understood when and how different types of protected areas are most effective in achieving specific conservation objectives. We assessed the impact of reserves on tree cover loss and gain through a case study in Tasmania, Australia. We considered varying protection levels (strict, where human activities are restricted, and multiple use) and governance types (public and private).

January 2025

Scottish Association for Marine Science-UHI, Oban PA37 1QA, UK.

This study explored harmful algal bloom (HAB) risk as a function of exposure, hazard and vulnerability, using Scotland as a case study. Exposure was defined as the fish biomass estimated to be lost from a bloom event, based on the total recorded annual production. Hazard was estimated from literature-reported bloom events.

Mapping Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis Treatment Outcomes in Hunan Province, China.

Trop Med Infect Dis

December 2024

School of Population Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, Curtin University, Perth, WA 6102, Australia.

Background: Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) remains a major public health challenge in China, with varying treatment outcomes across different regions. Understanding the spatial distribution of DR-TB treatment outcomes is crucial for targeted interventions to improve treatment success in high-burden areas such as Hunan Province. This study aimed to map the spatial distribution of DR-TB treatment outcomes at a local level and identify sociodemographic and environmental factors associated with poor treatment outcomes in Hunan Province, China.
