An IRB approved 2-year review and cost analysis of all packed red blood cells (pRBCs) issued, transfused and returned to the blood bank by air medical transport services for pre-hospital transfusion was performed. The cost to the blood bank for issuing and returning pRBCs that were not transfused in the pre-hospital setting was $3.24 per unit. Over the study period, there were 334 pRBCs not transfused by air medical services and returned to the blood bank totaling $1082.16 in direct labor costs, a trivial amount for providing possibly life-saving blood for pre-hospital transfusion.

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) is an anthropogenic chemical found in aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) and many consumer products. Despite its environmental ubiquity and persistence, little is known about the effects of PFOS on stress levels in wild animals. Here, we examined PFOS bioaccumulation and correlations between PFOS exposure and oxidative stress in snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) downstream of Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York, a known source of AFFF contamination.

Controlled breakdown has emerged as an effective method for fabricating solid-state nanopores in thin suspended dielectric membranes for various biomolecular sensing applications. On an unpatterned membrane, the site of nanopore formation by controlled breakdown is random. Nanopore formation on a specific site on the membrane has previously been realized using local thinning of the membrane by lithographic processes or laser-assisted photothermal etching under immersion in an aqueous salt solution.
