Affective science research has investigated how the sociocultural context shapes the bodily experience of emotion. Similarly, in the culture and mental health literature, there is a history of research on cultural variations in the presentation of somatic symptoms. A well-known example of the latter is the finding that Chinese depressed patients report more somatic symptoms compared to their "Western" counterparts. The present study represents a first step toward integrating these efforts. We examined reports of somatic and affective changes in 48 Chinese/Chinese American (CH) and 53 European American (EA) women responding to a sad film. Although CH and EA women reported experiencing similar levels of sadness, CH women experienced higher levels of somatic sensations (e.g., changes in heartbeat) relative to EA women. CH participants' reports of somatic changes were negatively associated with orientation to American culture. These findings suggest that cultural context shapes the subjective experience of somatic changes associated with sadness. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved).

The literature on nursing leadership tends to be mainly based on Western perspectives and models, which could be viewed as an imperialistic and colonialist aspect of nursing knowledge development. Furthermore, leadership competencies and skills could differ across countries due to variations in cultural backgrounds. The purpose of this discussion paper is to identify essential competencies of leaders from Asian nurse leaders' perspectives and provide suggestions for future nursing leadership.

This review summarizes recent findings on stress-related programming of brain development , with an emphasis on situating findings within the mothers' broader psychosocial experiences. Meta-analyses of observational studies on prenatal stress exposure indicate the direction and size of effects on child neurodevelopment are heterogeneous across studies. Inspired by lifespan and topological frameworks of adversity, we conceptualize individual variation in mothers' lived experience during and prior to pregnancy as a key determinant of these heterogeneous effects across populations.

Ovalbumin (OVA) is a high-risk allergen with complex tertiary structure in food samples. Here, we developed an accurate UPLC-MS/MS-based assay to improve OVA quantitative performance in processed foods. Full-length isotope-labeled OVA proteins (OVA-I) were synthesized using stable isotope labeling by amino acids in cell culture (SILAC) technique and employed as functional internal standards to ensure similar cleavage sites between internal standards and analytes.

Perception of emotion conveyed through language is influenced by embodied experiences obtained from social interactions, which may vary across different cultures. To explore cross-cultural differences in the perception of emotion between Chinese and English speakers, this study collected norms of valence and arousal from 322 native Mandarin speakers for 4923 Chinese words translated from Warriner et al., (Behavior Research Methods, 45, 1191-1207, 2013).

The significance of multiplication rate variation in malaria parasites needs to be determined, particularly for Plasmodium falciparum, the species that causes most virulent infections. To investigate this, parasites from cases presenting to hospital in The Gambia and from local community infections were culture-established and then tested under exponential growth conditions in a standardised six-day multiplication rate assay. The multiplication rate distribution was lower than seen previously in clinical isolates from another area in West Africa where infection is more highly endemic.
