Aims: We aimed to provide reference values for speckle-tracking derived systolic and diastolic myocardial deformation markers, and to determine their relation with age, sex, and cardiovascular risk factors.

Methods And Results: The Characteristics and Course of Heart Failure STAges A/B and Determinants of Progression (STAAB) cohort study recruited a representative sample of the population of Würzburg, Germany, aged 30-79 years. In a sample of 1818 participants (52% female, mean age 54±12 years) global longitudinal peak systolic strain (GL-PSS, n = 1218), systolic (GL-SSR, n = 1506), and early (GL-EDSR, n = 1506) and late diastolic strain rates (GL-LDSR, n = 1500) were derived from 2D speckle tracking analysis. From a subgroup of 323 individuals without any cardiovascular risk factor, sex- and age-specific reference values were computed. GL-PSS, GL-SSR, and GL-EDSR were associated with sex, GL-EDSR decreased and GL-LDSR increased with age. In the total sample, dyslipidemia was associated with altered GL-PSS, GL-SSR, and GL-EDSR in women but not in men, whereas obesity was associated with less favorable GL-PSS and GL-EDSR in either sex. Hypertension impacted more adversely on systolic and diastolic myocardial deformation in women compared to men (all p<0.01).

Conclusion: The female myocardium appeared more vulnerable to high blood pressure and dyslipidemia when compared to men, while obesity was associated with adverse myocardial deformation in either sex. The reference values for echocardiographic myocardial deformation provided for a non-diseased population and their here reported associations with cardiovascular risk factors will inform future observational and intervention studies regarding i) effect sizes and power calculation, ii) cross-study comparisons, and iii) categorization of myocardial deformation in specific patient groups.

Objectives The primary objective of this study is to describe and evaluate the diagnostic performance of the hyperdense right hemidiaphragm sign (HRHS) as a novel radiological indicator for diffuse fatty infiltration of the liver on non-enhanced CT (NECT) scans. This includes assessing its sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value, and comparing these metrics with other established NECT signs. Methods This cross-sectional multicenter retrospective study included all patients over 12 years of age who underwent both abdominal MRI and NECT scans of the abdomen within a period not exceeding six months at two tertiary hospitals (The Royal Hospital and Armed Forces Hospital, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman) between January 2010 and December 2022.

The detection of intracellular biothiols (cysteine, N-acetyl cysteine, and glutathione) with high selectivity and sensitivity is important to reveal biological functions. In this study, a 2-(2-methoxy-4-methylphenoxy)-3-chloro-5,8-dihydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dione (DDN-O) compound was newly synthesized and used as a fluorogenic probe (detector molecule) in the fluorometric method for the rapid, highly selective, and sensitive determination of biothiols. The intensity values (λ = 260 nm, λ = 620 nm) of the product were measured by adding biothiols to the reaction medium at varying concentrations and the glutathione equivalent thiol content values of each biothiol were calculated.

In-silico-based lead optimization of hit compounds targeting mitotic kinesin Eg5 for cancer management.

In Silico Pharmacol

January 2025

Phyto-medicine and Computational Biology Laboratory, Department of Biochemistry, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State Nigeria.

Unlabelled: Lead optimization is vital for turning hit compounds into therapeutic drugs. This study builds upon a prior in silico research, where the hit compounds had better binding affinity and stability compared to a reference drug. Using a genetic algorithm, 12,500 analogs of the top compounds from the prior study were generated.

Objectification of Skin Firmness: In Vivo Evaluation of 300 Women in Relation to Age.

J Cosmet Dermatol

January 2025

Cosmetic Science, Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany.

Background: The concept of "skin quality" (SQ) has gained widespread attention, with a recent international consensus defining it and outlining four "emergent perceptual categories" (EPCs), each accompanied by specific parameters and associated measurement methods. No research has confirmed whether the parameters linked to these EPCs vary objectively with age. This gap in data is significant, as understanding how these parameters correlate with age could be essential for creating an objective, age-adjusted classification of SQ.

Objective: To evaluate the main outcomes of disease activity and their association with other measures of activity, damage, and quality of life in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) according to time since diagnosis and positivity to antisynthetase autoantibodies (ASAs).

Methods: Cross-sectional multicenter study within the Spanish Myo-Spain registry. Cases were classified as incident (≤ 12 months since diagnosis) and prevalent.
