The central role of peripheral nodes in directed network dynamics.

Many social, technological, and biological systems with asymmetric interactions display a variety of collective phenomena, such as opinion formation and synchronization. This has motivated much research on the dynamical impact of local and mesoscopic structure in directed networks. However, the unique constraints imposed by the global organization of directed networks remain largely undiscussed. Here, we control the global organization of directed Erdős-Rényi networks, and study its impact on the emergence of synchronization and ferromagnetic ordering, using Kuramoto and Ising dynamics. In doing so, we demonstrate that source nodes - peripheral nodes without incoming links - can disrupt or entirely suppress the emergence of collective states in directed networks. This effect is imposed by the bow-tie organization of directed networks, where a large connected core does not uniquely ensure the emergence of collective states, as it does for undirected networks.

Background: The Getting Older Adults Outdoors (GO-OUT) randomized controlled trial showed that a workshop and 10-week park-based outdoor walk group (OWG) was superior to the workshop and 10 weekly reminders (WR) with increasing walking capacity, but not outdoor walking activity, health-promoting behavior, or successful aging, among older adults with difficulty walking outdoors. The advent of single-molecule, long-read sequencing (LRS) technologies by Oxford Nanopore Technologies and Pacific Biosciences has revolutionized genomics, transcriptomics and, more recently, epigenomics research. These technologies offer distinct advantages, including the direct detection of methylated DNA and simultaneous assessment of DNA sequences spanning multiple kilobases along with their modifications at the single-molecule level. This has enabled the development of new assays for analyzing chromatin states and made it possible to integrate data for DNA methylation, chromatin accessibility, transcription factor binding and histone modifications, thereby facilitating comprehensive epigenomic profiling.

Learning with noisy labels via clean aware sharpness aware minimization.

Noise label learning has attracted considerable attention owing to its ability to leverage large amounts of inexpensive and imprecise data. Sharpness aware minimization (SAM) has shown effective improvements in the generalization performance in the presence of noisy labels by introducing adversarial weight perturbations in the model parameter space. However, our experimental observations have shown that the SAM generalization bottleneck primarily stems from the difficulty of finding the correct adversarial perturbation amidst the noisy data.
