A plasmonic structure with transmission highly tunable in the mid-infrared spectral range is developed. This structure consists of a hexagonal array of metallic discs located on top of silicon pillars protruding through holes in a metallic Babinet complementary film. We reveal with FDTD simulations that changing the hole diameter tunes the main plasmonic resonance frequency of this structure throughout the infrared range. Due to the underlying Babinet physics of these coupled arrays, the spectral width of these plasmonic resonances is strongly reduced, and the higher harmonics are suppressed. Furthermore, we demonstrate that this structure can be easily produced by a combination of the nanosphere lithography and the metal-assisted chemical etching technique.

Azimuthal orientation and handedness dependence of the optical responses, accompanied by asymmetric transmission and asymmetric dichroism, were demonstrated on multilayers constructed with subwavelength periodic arrays of Babinet complementary miniarrays, illuminated by linearly and circularly polarized light. In case of single-sided illumination asymmetric optical responses were observed at the spectral location of maximal cross-polarization that is accompanied by radiative electric dipoles and weak, slowly-rotating in-plane magnetic dipoles on the nano-objects; where the outgoing waves are elliptically (almost circularly) polarized. The negative index material phenomenon was demonstrated, where the electric and magnetic dipoles overlap both spatially and spectrally.

Developing methods to sense local variations in properties of nearby materials, such as their refractive index and thickness, are important in numerous fields including chemistry and biomedical applications. Localized surface plasmons (LSPs) excited in plasmonic nanostructures have been demonstrated to be useful in this context due to the spectral location of their associated resonances being sensitive to changes in the environment near the plasmonic structures. This manuscript explores Babinet's principle by exploiting LSP resonances excited in complementary metal-dielectric cylindrical plasmonic structures (plasmonic particle-dimers and aperture-dimers in our case).

The rigid one-piece filter was produced by a simple process involving photolithography, dry etching, and deposition, each performed only once. The mirror reflection symmetries may be preserved around one or more arbitrary planes. Pseudospin-polarized waveguides supporting one-way states manifest robustness.
