Enhanced near-field and quality factor of resonance are key issues in plasmonic structures. Here, we demonstrate a kind of notched bowtie metamaterials in the terahertz (THz) regime with narrow linewidth and extremely enhanced near field. The notched bowtie is a variation of common bowtie structure created by introducing symmetric notches on the two sides of the triangular metallic structure. Benefiting from the introduction of notches, the modulation depth of transmittance spectra and near-field enhancement of the notched bowtie arrays were strongly enhanced due to the increase of the structure-derived equivalent inductance. The results demonstrated that near-field enhancement can be increased to above 4000. In addition, the designed structure possesses a narrowed resonance linewidth, and thus an improved quality factor, which could be a promising platform for THz sensing and other potential applications of THz metamaterials.

Electromigration and morphological changes in Ag nanostructures.

J Phys Condens Matter

February 2018

Institut für Festkörperphysik, Leibniz Universität Hannover, Appelstraße 2, 30167 Hannover, Germany. Laboratorium für Nano und Quantenengineering (LNQE), Leibniz Universität Hannover, Schneiderberg 39, 30167 Hannover, Germany.

Electromigration (EM) as a structuring tool was investigated in Ag nanowires (width 300 nm, thickness 25 nm) and partly in notched and bow-tie Ag structures on a Si(1 0 0) substrate in ultra-high vacuum using a four-tip scanning tunneling microscope in combination with a scanning electron microscope. From simulations of Ag nanowires we got estimates of temperature profiles, current density profiles, EM and thermal migration (TM) mass flux distributions within the nanowire induced by critical current densities of 10 A cm. At room temperature, the electron wind force at these current densities by far dominates over thermal diffusion, and is responsible for formation of voids at the cathode and hillocks at the anode side.

Plasmon-assisted audio recording.

We present the first demonstration of the recording of optically encoded audio onto a plasmonic nanostructure. Analogous to the "optical sound" approach used in the early twentieth century to store sound on photographic film, we show that arrays of gold, pillar-supported bowtie nanoantennas could be used in a similar fashion to store sound information that is transferred via an amplitude modulated optical signal to the near field of an optical microscope. Retrieval of the audio information is achieved using standard imaging optics.

Clinics in diagnostic imaging (139). Displaced medial meniscus bucket-handle tear.

Singapore Med J

April 2012

Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, 11 Jalan Tan Tock Seng, Singapore 308433.

A 58-year-old man presented with knee pain and swelling, following a previous injury. A displaced bucket-handle tear of the medial meniscus was diagnosed on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and subsequently confirmed by arthroscopy. MR imaging is accurate in diagnosing bucket-handle tears.

Ultrastructurally the spermatozoon of Acanthopagrus schlegeli (Sparidae) has a spherical, homogeneously electron-dense nucleus with a deep axial nuclear fossa, and an unusual notch, shaped like a bowtie, in the nuclear region. The short midpiece contains four spherical mitochondria and encircles the basal body of the flagellum. It is concluded that the spermatozoon is of a primitive type, although it is characterized by several unique features which may provide useful systematic characters.
