In the presence of strong light scattering, as often encountered in biological tissue, optical microscopy becomes challenging and technical demanding. Beside image quality, the quantitative determination of molecular properties is also strongly affected by scattering. We have carried out fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) experiments, in a solution of fluorophores, through a sparse scattering layer made of dielectric beads. We observe that the fluorescence signal steadily decreases as the focus is moved away from the scattering layer. By contrast, the estimated number of molecules recovers its normal value beyond a characteristic distance of about twice the bead diameters, below which it is strongly biased. Accompanying theoretical modeling demonstrates how diffraction and refraction by the scattering layer and their impact on FCS measurements depend on size and refractive index of the beads.

The influence of the film/substrate interface and the role of film thickness on the structural transition temperature for thin films of the asymmetric BTBT derivative 7-decyl-2-phenyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-][1]-benzothiophene (Ph-BTBT-10) have been addressed by using Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and synchrotron grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS). Our data strongly suggest that the structural transformation from a single-layer phase to the thermodynamically stable bilayer structure develops from the bottom of the film to its surface. Contrary to observations in other organic semiconductor films, notably, the thinner the Ph-BTBT-10 film, the lower is the transition temperature.

Bottlebrush block polymers, characterized by densely grafted side chains extending from a backbone, have recently garnered significant attention. A particularly attractive feature is the accessibility of ordered morphologies with domain spacings exceeding several hundred nanometers, a capability that is challenging to achieve with linear polymers. These large morphologies make bottlebrush block polymers promising for various applications, such as photonic crystals.

Non-layered 2D materials offer unique and more advantageous physicochemical properties than those of conventional 2D layered materials. However, the isotropic chemical bonding nature of non-layered materials hinders their lateral growth, making the synthesis of large-area continuous thin films challenging. Herein, a facile kinetically tailored chemical vapor deposition (KT-CVD) approach is introduced for the synthesis of 2D molybdenum nitride (MoN), a representative non-layered material.

The hydration shell of a protein is so important and an integral part of it, that protein's structure, stability and functionality cannot be conceived in its absence. This layer has unique properties not found in bulk water. However, ions, always present in the protein environment, disturb the hydration shell depending on their nature and concentration.
