We use the Second Moment Tight Binding with charge eQuilibration (SMTB-Q) advanced empirical potential to study clusters of oxygen interstitials in hyperstoichiometric UO. This potential reproduces the trends obtained from density functional theory calculations. We exhibit a new form of cuboctahedron that proves to be the most stable oxygen cluster in UO. Considering different types of random arrangements of these clusters, we reproduce the fact that UO and UO are the only two stable phases at low temperature in their composition range. Focusing on UO at low temperature, we obtain a model for the α-UO phase, which exhibits the experimental 3 space group. We present the results of the original neutron diffraction experiments measured on UO at 1.5 K and perform a Rietveld refinement of the calculated UO structure, which enables us to propose a complete description of the α-UO phase.

Mycofactocin is a redox cofactor essential for the alcohol metabolism of mycobacteria. While the biosynthesis of mycofactocin is well established, the gene , which encodes an oxidoreductase of the glucose-methanol-choline superfamily, remained functionally uncharacterized. Here, we show that MftG enzymes are almost exclusively found in genomes containing mycofactocin biosynthetic genes and are present in 75% of organisms harboring these genes.

As bacterial contamination crises escalate, the development of advanced membranes possessing both high flux and antibacterial properties is of paramount significance for enhancing water sterilization efficiency. Herein, an ultrathin layer of TbPa (an imine-linked covalent organic framework) and nanosized CuO clusters, sequentially deposited onto polyethersulfone membranes, demonstrate exceptional water flux performance, reaching a permeance level of 16000 LHM bar. The deposited TbPa, generating uniformly distributed reduction sites under illumination, facilitates the uniform formation of CuO clusters.

The complex and dynamic nature of airborne fine particulate matter (PM) has hindered understanding of its chemical composition, sources, and toxic effects. In the first steps of a larger study, here, we aimed to elucidate relationships between source regions, ambient conditions, and the chemical composition in water extracts of PM samples ( = 85) collected over 16 months at an observatory in the Yellow Sea. In each extract, we quantified elements and major ions and profiled the complex mixtures of organic compounds by nontarget mass spectrometry.
