The environmental contamination due to mining activities in the Andean region of Bolivia is a serious concern, as it leads to highly acidic (pH 2.4) acid mine drainage (AMD), severely polluted by sulfate (>12,000 mg L). Passive bioreactors entailing biological sulfate reduction and removal of metals through sulfide precipitation have been recognized as a promising biotechnology. The reactivity of mixtures containing locally available substrates: sheep manure, compost and straw, was assessed through batch experiments conducted with a synthetic solution simulating the composition of AMD from San José mine (Oruro). The removal of sulfate and metals was successful in all reactors, at the end of the experiment (56 days) sulfate concentrations dropped to 1378-2081 mg L, corresponding to a removal efficiency between 84% and 89%, while average removal for Fe, Zn, Pb, and Cd were 99.8%, 98.5%, 94.7%, 98.6%, respectively. The sulfate and metal removal showed three phases. In the first phase, the removal was independent of the organic composition and attributable to pH-controlled mechanisms i.e. adsorption, precipitation of oxy(hydroxides) and co-precipitation. During the second phase, sulfate and metals concentrations remained rather constant; while in the third phase, the removal was affected by the organic matter composition. Sulfate removal rate attained the highest values (227-243 mg L d) in the third phase, and it was attributable to biological reduction with not sulfate limitation. The depletion of nutrients rather than the sulfate availability may have limited the sulfate removal at the end of the experiment.

Object: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) have a high risk of serious infection, in particular severe pneumonia. This study aimed to investigate the transcriptional landscape, lower respiratory tract (LRT) microbiome and metabolomic profiles in the lung of RA-ILD patients with pneumonia.
Method: A total of 10 RA-ILD with pneumonia were enrolled in this study.

Metallofullerenols and fullerenols have attracted attention due to their remarkable ability to interact with various biologically relevant molecules, paving the way for biomedical applications, ranging from medical imaging techniques to drug carriers, acting with increased efficiency and reduced side effects. In this work, we investigated the effects of two fullerene derivatives, Gd@C(OH) and C(OH), on erythrocyte membrane components under oxidative stress conditions induced by 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) as a source of peroxyl radicals. The results demonstrated that gadolinium encapsulation within the fullerene cage enhanced the electron affinity of Gd@C(OH), resulting in stronger antioxidant activity.

Preterm birth (PTB) remains a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality, with inflammation-induced PTB posing a significant challenge due to its complex pathophysiology. To address this, we developed an in vitro platform utilizing hTERT-immortalized human myometrial (hTERT-HM) cells integrated with a multielectrode array (MEA) biosensing system and optical calcium imaging. Compared to primary uterine myometrial cells, hTERT-HM cells exhibit superior reproducibility, high scalability, and convenient manipulation, facilitating the consistent and large-scale investigations.

Experiments were conducted in controlled laboratory conditions to determine the size-resolved CCN (Cloud Condensation Nuclei) activity of sub micrometer-sized aerosols containing nuclear fission products (CsI and CsOH) and abundant ambient inorganic aerosols ammonium sulphates ((NH)SO), ammonium chloride (NHCl), sodium nitrate (NaNO), and sodium chloride (NaCl). The presence of these atmospheric-relevant compounds internally mixed with fission product compounds has the potential to affect the capacity of ambient particulates of aerosols to absorb water and function as CCN. Once in the atmosphere, the dynamics of airborne radionuclides and subsequently their fate gets affected by dry and wet deposition processes.

Observational studies of marine aerosols are essential for understanding the global aerosol budget and its environmental impacts. This study presents simultaneous in-situ measurements of major ionic components (Cl, NO, SO, NH, K, Ca, Na, and Mg) in aerosols and gaseous species (HCl, HNO, HONO, SO, and NH) over the North Pacific Ocean from July 4 to 15 and September 19 to October 3, 2022. Using high temporal resolution instruments aboard the Republic of Korea's icebreaker research vessel Araon, this study aimed to (1) report the spatial and temporal distributions of aerosols and gaseous species, (2) estimate the source contributions of continental anthropogenic pollutants, and (3) assess the influence of aerosol chemical composition and gaseous species on aerosol acidity and water content.
