Liquid jet X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is used under near ambient pressure conditions to characterize Fe aqueous solutions. Counter ions, such as Cl and Br ions, added to the solution lead to changes in the first solvation sphere of the Fe-aqua complex in solution. Binding energy shifts of 0.4 eV to lower binding energy are observed in the Cl 2p spectra, 2 eV to higher binding energy in the Fe 2p spectra and no shifts are observed in the Br 3d spectra. Depletion of the Cl species is observed at the interface, caused by coordination with Fe. Depletion of Cl at the liquid/vapor interface may have significant impacts on oxidative chemistry at the interface of atmospheric aerosols that contain both chloride and iron. The Cl complexation with the Fe ions will also affect the Fenton chemistry that is dependent on this metal ion.

Microcavity exciton polaritons (polaritons) as part-light part-matter quasiparticles garner considerable attention for Bose-Einstein condensation at elevated temperatures. Recently, halide perovskites have emerged as promising room-temperature polaritonic platforms because of their large exciton binding energies and superior optical properties. However, currently, inducing room-temperature nonequilibrium polariton condensation in perovskite microcavities requires optical pulsed excitations with high excitation densities.

The chloroplast genome encodes key components of the photosynthetic light reaction machinery as well as the large subunit of the enzyme central for carbon fixation, Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphat-carboxylase/-oxygenase (RuBisCo). Its expression is predominantly regulated posttranscriptionally, with nuclear-encoded RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) playing a key role. Mutants of chloroplast gene expression factors often exhibit impaired chloroplast biogenesis, especially in cold conditions.

Dexamethasone sodium phosphate (DSP) and betamethasone sodium phosphate (BSP) imprinted hydrogels embedded with two-dimensional photonic crystals (2DPC) were developed as hormones-sensitive photonic hydrogel sensors with highly sensitive, selective, anti-interference and reproducible recognition capability. The DSP/BSP molecularly imprinted photonic hydrogels (denoted as DSP-MIPH and BSP-MIPH) can specifically recognize DSP/BSP by rebinding the DSP/BET molecules to nanocavities in the hydrogel network. This recognition is enabled by the similar shape, size, and binding sites of the nanocavities to the target molecules.

Implicit solvation models permit the approximate description of solute-solvent interactions, where water is the most often considered solvent due to its relevance in biological systems. The use of other solvents is less common but is relevant for applications such as in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) or chromatography. As an example, chloroform is commonly used in anisotropic NMR to measure residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) of chiral analytes weakly aligned by an alignment medium.

Mitochondrial rRNAs play important roles in regulating mtDNA-encoded gene expression and energy metabolism subsequently. However, the proteins that regulate mitochondrial 16S rRNA processing remain poorly understood. Herein, we generated adipose-specific Wbscr16-/-mice and cells, both of which exhibited dramatic mitochondrial changes.
