Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship of the morphology of the articular eminence and mandibular fossa to facial profile and sex by using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images.

Study Design: CBCT examinations of 76 patients were conducted, and the patients were classified according to facial profile as dolichocephalic, mesocephalic, or brachycephalic. The inclination and height of the articular eminence and the inclination of the mandibular fossa of 152 temporomandibular joints were measured. Comparisons between these measurements and facial profile and gender were performed by 2-way analysis of variance with Tukey's post hoc test. Significance was established at α = 0.05.

Results: Males with brachycephaly presented significantly greater values of eminence inclination compared with those with other facial types and greater values than patients with dolichocephaly for the measurements of eminence height and inclination of the fossa posterior wall (P ≤ .05). Females with brachycephaly presented significantly greater eminence height values compared with those with other facial profiles (P ≤ .05). No significant differences were observed between males and females.

Conclusions: The morphology of the articular eminence and the mandibular fossa is associated with facial profile, with males with brachycephaly showing greater inclination of the eminence and mandibular fossa. Articular eminence height in brachycephaly was greater in both sexes.

Arthroscopic Management of Juxta-Articular Proximal Tibial Chondroblastoma: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Orthop Surg

November 2024

Sports Medicine Center, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Orthopedic Research Institute, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • - Chondroblastoma is a rare bone tumor found at the ends of bones, accounting for about 1% of primary bone tumors. It can be invasive, and there's a risk of recurrence after traditional open surgery, which can also cause damage to the bone structure.
  • - In this case study, a 14-year-old male underwent a successful arthroscopic procedure to remove a chondroblastoma from the proximal tibia. The surgery involved careful lesion excision and bone cavity management, using a substitute for autologous bone grafts.
  • - After one year of follow-up, the patient showed no symptoms or knee issues, and imaging confirmed successful bone graft healing without recurrence, suggesting that arthroscopic surgery could be a viable

The characteristics of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are essential in orthodontic and prosthetic treatments. Previous studies have suggested an association between articular eminence inclinations (AEI) and occlusal plane characteristics using radiographs, but no bilateral analysis has been conducted using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). This study aimed to investigate the specific characteristics of the occlusal plane inclinations associated with unilateral and bilateral AEI using CBCT.

Comparative clinical efficacy of "Figure-8" Banding and double-row anchor suture-bridge fixation in arthroscopic management of tibial intercondylar eminence avulsion fractures.

J Orthop Surg Res

October 2024

Yantai Key Laboratory for Repair and Reconstruction of Bone & Joint, No.91 Jiefang Road, Zhifu District, Yantai, 264003, China.

Objective: The objective of this study is to assess and compare the clinical efficacy of "Figure-8" banding and double-row anchor suture-bridge fixation techniques in the arthroscopic management of tibial intercondylar eminence avulsion fractures.

Method: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the medical records of 42 patients who underwent arthroscopic surgery for tibial intercondylar eminence fractures at our institution from June 2017 to June 2022. This cohort included 20 cases treated with "Figure-8" banding and 22 cases managed using double-row anchor suture-bridge fixation.

Anterior Disc Displacement and Cortication Patterns in the Temporomandibular Joint.

Med Sci Monit

October 2024

Department of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology, Faculty of Dentistry, Harran University, Sanliurfa, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the connection between articular eminence cortication (AEC) and mandibular condyle cortication (MCC) in patients with anterior reduction disc displacement (ARDD) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
  • Out of 142 patients initially examined, 81 met the criteria for having ARDD, and various forms of cortication were classified from their imaging results.
  • The findings suggest a significant correlation between the loss of AEC and MCC with the diagnosis of ARDD, indicating these factors may serve as diagnostic criteria for the condition.
