Microcystin (MC), a hepatotoxin produced by cyanobacteria, was introduced into the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), Florida, in 2005 through freshwater outflows. Since then, MC has been detected in humans, domestic animals, and wildlife in the lagoon. Potential public health effects associated with MC exposure along the IRL include an increased risk of non-alcoholic liver disease among area residents.

Naked siRNAs are sensitive to enzymatic degradation, phagocytic entrapment, quick renal excretion, membrane impermeability, endosomal escape, and off-target effects. Designing a safe and efficient nanocarrier for siRNA delivery to the target site without toxicity remains a significant hurdle in gene therapy. CA is a unique derivative of hydroxyapatite and a highly pH-sensitive nanocarrier with strong particle aggregation and a high polydispersity index.

Article Synopsis
  • Patchy data on litter decomposition in wetlands limits understanding of carbon storage, prompting a global study involving over 180 wetlands across multiple countries and climates.
  • The study found that freshwater wetlands and tidal marshes had more organic matter remaining after decay, indicating better potential for carbon preservation in these areas.
  • Elevated temperatures positively affect the decomposition of resistant organic matter, with projections suggesting an increase in decay rates by 2050; however, the impact varies by ecosystem type and highlights the need to recognize both local and global factors influencing carbon storage.

Emerging contaminants as indicators of short-term environmental changes in an eutrophicated coastal lagoon.

LABMAM/Department of Chemistry, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, 22453-900 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Electronic address:

This research aimed to assess the potential of emerging contaminants as environmental quality indicators for short-term monitoring programs, in contrast with traditional contaminants. Thirteen sediment samples from from Piratininga, a coastal lagoon subjected to anthropogenic impact, were analyzed for the following compounds: napropamide, diclofenac, naproxen, triclosan, ibuprofen, 17β-estradiol, bisphenol A, nadolol, ethofibrate and carbamazepine. The developed method, which included solid phase extraction, derivatization, and analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, demonstrated robustness and suitability with quantification limits between 0.

Most living shoreline site selection and design decision support tools are based upon existing environmental conditions. We developed a web-based, geospatial tool called Future Shorelines that integrates high-resolution landscape elevation data and a matrix of locally derived NOAA Interagency Sea Level Rise Scenarios to characterize future conditions of submergence and shoreline translation induced by sea level rise. Once the practitioner selects a location of interest, sea level rise scenario (e.
