Objectives: Several studies in patients who underwent open heart surgery found that myocardial ischemic damage was reduced by potassium cardioplegia combined with lidocaine infusion. The authors evaluated the effects of potassium/lidocaine-induced cardiac standstill during conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on myocardial injury and left ventricular dysfunction after resuscitation from prolonged ventricular fibrillation (VF) cardiac arrest in a pig model.
Methods: Ventricular fibrillation was induced in 16 pigs, and circulatory arrest was maintained for 14 minutes.

Low concentrations of lidocaine reversibly decrease input resistance and shunt action potentials in neurons of the ventral posterolateral thalamic nucleus (VPL) in vitro. Using differential interference contrast infrared videomicroscopy and whole-cell patch-clamp techniques in rat brain slices, we studied the effects of bicuculline methobromide to test whether the lidocaine-induced shunt in VPL neurons is mediated by GABA(A) receptors. Bicuculline (50 microM) restored tonic firing rates to control values following reduction by lidocaine (10 microM).

The local anesthetic lidocaine (XILOCAINA), 2%, was injected into the tissue surrounding the anterior region of the third cerebral ventricle (AV3V) of the rat, through a permanently implanted cannula, to produce a temporary and reversible disruption of the nervous connections of this area with other cellular nuclei while leaving the vascular connections intact. Following 24 h water deprivation, lidocaine was injected, and after 20 min water intake decreased; subsequently, the lidocaine-injected rats behaved similarly to control rats injected with artificial cerebrospinal fluid. Osmotic drinking was not affected.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of flumazenil on local anesthetic-induced acute toxicity. For each of the three tested anesthetics (etidocaine, mepivacaine and lidocaine) 6 groups of mice were treated by a single dose of flumazenil (0.125, 0.
