An edible hydroxypropyl starch (HPS) based bilayer film with a waterproof layer of zein was successfully prepared through a two-step solvent casting method. The morphology, mechanical properties, as well as water barrier properties of the bilayer film were systematically studied. Results showed that bilayer film presented smooth surface morphology with an improved visibility, and there was an adhesion interface between two layers. Water resistance and UV barrier property, as well as mechanical property, were significantly improved. In addition, the interactions between starch and zein through hydrogen bonding were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. In MD simulation, the relative trajectories were dynamically presented. Conjunction of starch and zein through hydrogen bonding among the hydroxyl and amino (carboxyl) groups was identified, and stronger affinity with starch mainly rooted from asparagine (ASN) and tyrosine (TYR) residues.

AISI 316L stainless steel is extensively used in various fields, including medicine. In this study, in order to improve antibacterial properties, reduce elastic modulus, increase hydrophilicity and delay corrosion on the surface of AISI 316L stainless steel pieces for biomedical applications, zinc and magnesium elements were used for coating. Zn monolayer, Zn-Mg bilayer, and Zn-Mg-Zn triple coatings were deposited on AISI 316L substrates using the thermal evaporation method.

Electrospinning is a versatile technique for obtaining nano/micro fibers which are able to significantly change the active properties of composite materials and bring in new dimensions to agri-food applications. Composite bio-based packaging materials obtained from whey proteins, functionalized with thyme essential oil (TEO) and reinforced by electrospun polylactic acid (PLA) fibers, represent a promising solution for developing new active food packaging using environmentally friendly materials. The aim of this study is to obtain and characterize one-side-active composite films covered with a PLA fiber mat: (i) WF/G1, WF/G2, and WF/G3 resulting from electrospinning with one needle at different electrospinning times of 90, 150, and 210 min, respectively, and (ii) WF/G4 obtained with two face-to-face needles after 210 min of electrospinning.

The electrodes of thin film transistors (TFTs) have evolved from conventional single Cu layers to multi-layered structures formed by Cu and other metals or alloys. Different etching rates of various metals and galvanic corrosion between distinct metals may cause etching defects such as rough or uneven cross-sectional surfaces of stacked electrodes. Therefore, the etching of stacked electrodes faces new challenges.

Boundary Lubrication with Adsorbed Anionic Surfactant Bilayers in Hard Water.

The adsorption behavior of an anionic surfactant, hydroxy alkane sulfonate with an alkyl chain length of 18 (C18HAS), from its hard water solution onto a mica surface and resulting lubrication properties were investigated. Because of the double chain-like chemical structure and aggregation behavior, C18HAS formed vesicles in hard water, which adsorbed onto a negatively charged mica surface via cation (Ca) bridging and then transformed into a bilayer film. The number of bilayers formed on the surface was evaluated by force curve measurements using an atomic force microscope (AFM), and the results showed a time-dependent increase of the number of adsorbed bilayers.

Semitransparent perovskite solar cells (ST-PSCs) for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) face the challenge of achieving high efficiency due to significant light loss. The SnO2 electron transport layer (ETL), utilized in n-i-p PSCs and prepared via the sol-gel method, is susceptible to aggregation on substrate, resulting in light scattering that diminishes absorption of the perovskite layer. In this study, we propose a strategy that combines atomic layer deposition (ALD) and sol-gel solution to deposit a bilayer SnO2 structure to address these issues.
