Atomic magnetometers (AMs) offer many advantages over superconducting quantum interference devices due to, among other things, having comparable sensitivity while not requiring cryogenics. One of the major limitations of AMs is the challenge of configuring them as gradiometers. We report the development of a spin-exchange relaxation free vector atomic magnetic gradiometer with a sensitivity of 3 fT cm Hz and common mode rejection ratio >150 in the band from DC to 100 Hz. We introduce a background suppression figure of merit for characterizing the performance of gradiometers. It allows for optimally setting the measurement baseline and for quickly assessing the advantage, if any, of performing a measurement in a gradiometric mode. As an application, we consider the problem of fetal magnetocardiography (fMCG) detection in the presence of a large background maternal MCG signal.

In the quest for an ideal wound healing material, human amniotic membrane (AM), tilapia skin collagen (TSC), and Centella asiatica (CA) have been studied separately for their healing potential. In this study, we formulated AM, TSC, and CA gel and studied their competency and wound healing efficacy in vivo. Gel was formulated using AM, TSC, CA, Carbopol 934, acrylic acid, glycerine, and triethanolamine and physicochemical properties e.

Magnetic semiconductors with spin-polarized non-metallic atoms are usually overlooked in applications because of their poor performances in magnetic moments and under critical temperatures. Herein, magnetic characteristics of 2D pentagon-based XN (X = B, Al, and Ga) are revealed based on first-principles calculations. It was proven that XN structures are antiferromagnetic semiconductors with bandgaps of 2.

In this study, we explore the structural intricacies of cellulose, a polymer composed of glucose monomers arranged in a linear chain, primarily investigated through solid-state NMR techniques. Specifically, we employ low-field proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-NMR) to delve into the diverse hydrogen atom types within the cellulose molecule. The low-field H-NMR technique allows us to discern these hydrogen atoms based on their distinct chemical shifts, providing valuable insights into the various functional groups present in cellulose.

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructures consist of different 2D crystals with diverse properties, constituting the cornerstone of the new generation of 2D electronic devices. Yet interfaces in heterostructures inevitably break bulk symmetry and structural continuity, resulting in delicate atomic rearrangements and novel electronic structures. In this paper, we predict that 2D interfaces undergo "spontaneous curvature", which means when two flat 2D layers approach each other, they inevitably experience out-of-plane curvature.

Atomically precise synthesis of graphene nanostructures on semiconductors and insulators has been a formidable challenge. In particular, the metallic substrates needed to catalyze cyclodehydrogenative planarization reactions limit subsequent applications that exploit the electronic and/or magnetic structure of graphene derivatives. Here, we introduce a protocol in which an on-surface reaction is initiated and carried out regardless of the substrate type.
