Thione-containing nucleobases have attracted the attention of the scientific community for their application in oncology, virology, and transplantology. The detailed understanding of the reactivity of the purine derivative 8-thioguanosine (8-TG) with reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals is crucial for its biological relevance. An extensive investigation on the fate of 8-TG under both reductive and oxidative conditions is here reported, and it was tested by employing steady-state photooxidation, laser flash photolysis, as well as γ-radiolysis in aqueous solutions. The characterization of the 8-TG T excited state by laser flash photolysis and the photooxidation experiments confirmed that singlet oxygen is a crucial intermediate in the formation of the unexpected reduced product guanosine, without the formation of the usual oxygenated sulfinic or sulfonic acids. Furthermore, a thorough screening of different radiolytic conditions upon γ-radiation afforded the reduced product. These results were rationalized by performing control experiments in the predominant presence of each reactive species formed by radiolysis of water, and the mechanistic pathway scenario was postulated on these bases.

Diffraction-before-destruction imaging with ultrashort X-ray pulses can visualize non-equilibrium processes, such as chemical reactions, with sub-femtosecond precision in the native environment. Here, a nanospecimen diffracts a single X-ray flash before it disintegrates. The sample structure can be reconstructed from the coherent diffraction image (CDI).

In the course of 266 nm nanosecond laser flash photolysis of carbazole (CBL) in acetonitrile, we discovered a new transient absorption band centered at 360 nm that has been heretofore unreported despite numerous reports on similar topics. To put some limits on possible transients responsible for this absorption band and thus to solve the mechanism of CBL photolysis, we employed the strategy of selectively blocking the CBL active sites by various modifications in the structure. This strategy was supported by the use of the solvent effect and triplet quenching by molecular oxygen.

Plastic waste (PW) presents a significant environmental challenge due to its persistent accumulation and harmful effects on ecosystems. According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), global plastic production in 2024 is estimated to reach approximately 500 million tons. Without effective intervention, most of this plastic is expected to become waste, potentially resulting in billions of tons of accumulated PW by 2060.

Single GAF Domain Phytochrome Exhibits a pH-Dependent Shunt on the Millisecond Timescale.

The light-sensing activity of phytochromes is based on the reversible light-induced switching between two isomerization states of the bilin chromophore. These photo-transformations may not necessarily be only unidirectional, but could potentially branch back to the initial ground state in a thermally driven process termed shunt. Such shunts have been rarely reported, and thus our understanding of this process and its governing factors are limited.

This study investigates the fabrication of phase change material-poly(butylene adipate--terephthalate) (PCM-PBAT) composites through melt blending techniques, focusing on the impact of isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) treatment on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) treatment on aluminum nitride (AlN) particles. Analysis of mechanical properties highlights an enhancement in tensile strength with APTES-treated AlN particles, while dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) reveals an increase in stiffness. Laser flash analysis (LFA) investigation demonstrates a significant increase, up to 325%, in thermal conductivity compared to PCM-PBAT composites without filler.
