Parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) innervates with several peripheral organs such as liver, pancreas and regulates energy metabolism. However, the direct role of PNS on food intake has been poorly understood. In the present study, we investigated the role of parasympathetic nervous system in regulation of feeding by chemogenetic methods. Adeno associated virus carrying DREADD (designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs) infused into the target brain region by stereotaxic surgery. The stimulatory hM3Dq or inhibitory hM4Di DREADD was over-expressed in selective population of dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) neurons by Cre-recombinase-dependent manners. Activation of parasympathetic neuron by intraperitoneal injection of the M3-muscarinic receptor ligand clozapine-N-oxide (CNO) (1 mg/kg) suppressed food intake and resulted in body weight loss in ChAT-Cre mice. Parasympathetic neurons activation resulted in improved glucose tolerance while inhibition of the neurons resulted in impaired glucose tolerance. Stimulation of parasympathetic nervous system by injection of CNO (1 mg/kg) increased oxygen consumption and energy expenditure. Within the hypothalamus, in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) changed AGRP/POMC neurons. These results suggest that direct activation of parasympathetic nervous system decreases food intake and body weight with improved glucose tolerance.

Autistic adults experience greater rates of anxiety and depression compared to the general population. Compassion-focused therapy interventions, aimed at promoting self-compassion capabilities, have shown efficacy in improving mental health outcomes in autistic and non-autistic samples suffering from self-criticism that contribute to difficulties in emotion regulation. We explored the experiences of autistic adults during a brief one-week online self-compassion exercise to evaluate it's feasibility and acceptability through self-report, experience sampling, and parasympathetic activity measured via HRV.

Background: Previous literature has highlighted that excessive alcohol use (EAU) is directly linked with permanent neurological damage. Studies have also highlighted gradual improvements in heart rate variability (HRV) after cessation of alcohol use. Moreover, chronic alcohol consumption has also been correlated with reduced HRV and an increase in skin conductance (SC) among healthy adults, leading to a combined decline in cognitive performance.

COVID-19 is associated with long-term cardiovascular complications. Heart Rate Variability (HRV), a measure of sympathetic (SNS) and parasympathetic (PNS) control, has been shown to predict COVID-19 outcomes and correlate with disease progression but a comprehensive analysis that includes demographic influences has been lacking. The objective of this study was to determine the balance between SNS, PNS and heart rhythm regulation in hospitalized COVID-19 patients and compare it with similar measurements in healthy volunteers and individuals with cardiovascular diseases (CVD), while also investigating the effects of age, Body Mass Index (BMI), gender and race.
