Direct laser writing of surface waveguides with ultrashort pulses is a crucial achievement towards all-laser manufacturing of photonic integrated circuits sensitive to their environment. In this Letter, few-cycle laser pulses (with a sub-10 fs duration) are used to produce subsurface waveguides in a non-doped, non-coated fused-silica substrate. The fabrication technique relies on laser-induced microdensification below the threshold for nanopore formation. The optical losses of the fabricated waveguides are governed by the optical properties of the superstrate. We have measured losses ranging from less than 0.1 dB/mm (air superstrate) up to 2.8 dB/mm when immersion oil is applied on top of the waveguide.

The holographic technique is one of the simplest methods for designing antennas based on metasurface. This paper presents a spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) leaky-wave antenna (LWA) based on the concept of impedance modulated metasurfaces by the anisotropic holographic technique. Instead of parasitic elements, anisotropic SSPP elements are exploited to achieve radiation with circular polarization.

We integrate monolayer TMDCs into silicon-on-insulation (SOI) waveguides and dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton (DLSPP) waveguides to enhance nonlinear parameters (γ) of silicon-based waveguides. By optimizing the waveguide geometry, we have achieved significantly improved γ. In MoSe-on-SOI and MoSe-in-DLSPP waveguide with optimized geometry, the maximum γ at the excitonic resonant peak (λ) is 5001.

Optical sensors are among the most significant optical devices that have found extensive applications for THz sensing. Surface plasmon-based sensors have attracted increasing attention more than other kinds of optical sensors such as photonic crystal, optical fiber, and graphene sensors, owing to their compact footprint, fast reaction, and high sensitivity value. Therefore, this work reviews plasmonic sensor structures divided into three general categories.

Sensitive detection of incident acoustic waves over a broad frequency band offers a faithful representation of photoacoustic pressure transients of biological microstructures. Here, we propose a plasmon waveguide resonance sensor for responding to the photoacoustic impulses. By sequentially depositing Au, MgF, and SiO films on a coverslip, a composite waveguide layer produces a tightly confined optical evanescent field at the SiO-water interface with extremely strong electric field intensity, enabling the retrieval of photoacoustic signals with an estimated noise-equivalent-pressure (NEP) sensitivity of ∼92 Pa and a -6-dB bandwidth of ∼208 MHz.

Single Molecule Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (smFRET) is a popular technique to directly observe biomolecular dynamics in real time, offering unique mechanistic insight into proteins, ribozymes, and so forth. However, inevitable photobleaching of the fluorophores puts a stringent limit on the total time a surface-tethered molecule can be monitored, fundamentally limiting the information gain through conventional smFRET measurements. DyeCycling addresses this problem by using reversibly - instead of covalently - coupled FRET fluorophores, through which it can break the photobleaching limit and theoretically provide unlimited observation time.
