Crystal structures of a rhodamine derivative in its closed and open spirolactam ring forms were developed, which allows selective and sensitive detection of Cu ions at a micromolar range in neutral medium. The chemosensing properties of the probe through a pentacoordinate Cu ions were proven by spectroscopic and theoretical analysis. The spirolactam ring opening as the Cu selective sensor was applied to spinach () to estimate the accumulation of copper as copper(II) in the plant.

A novel probe NIR8 decorated with colorimetric, fluorometric, turn-on, and NIR properties was designed and synthesized using the chromenylium-cyanine platform for sensitive and selective quantification of Hg in real samples. The interaction between the probe and Hg resulted in the opening of the closed spirolactam ring of the chromenylium-cyanine platform, leading to a notable color shift from yellow to green. Concurrently, ratiometric spectral changes at 380 and 725 nm for UV-Vis and signal enhancement at 755 nm for fluorescence were observed.

Vanadate has become an important indicator for environmental testing due to its high toxicity, mobility, and difficulty in degradation. In addition, depending on its dynamic aggregation, analyzing vanadate is not a single content test; it needs further morphological analysis. Previous research has tended to construct a single functional platform with complicated procedures and expensive equipment, making it difficult to obtain a comprehensive picture of vanadate in a short time.

A Novel Rhodamine B Fluorescent Probe Derived from Carboxymethyl Chitosan for the Selective Detection of Fe.

Polymers (Basel)

November 2024

NHC Key Laboratory of Control of Tropical Diseases, School of Tropical Medicine, Hainan Medical University, Haikou 571199, China.

In this study, we synthesized a fluorescent material by modifying the C-2 amino group of carboxymethyl chitosan with a rhodamine B derivative, which was proposed and demonstrated using H NMR and FT-IR measurements. A series of experiments including selectivity, sensitivity, reversibility, pH, and water content were conducted to investigate the fluorometric and colorimetric properties of the grafted polymer. Utilizing a Fe-induced ring-opening mechanism of the rhodamine B spirolactam, we found that the grafted polymer exhibited a highly selective fluorescence response to Fe, with enhanced fluorescence at 583 nm compared to other tested metal ions and anions, accompanied by the characteristic absorption peak of rhodamine B that appeared at 561 nm with a noticeable color change from colorless to pink, facilitating visual observation.

Synergistic [4 + 1] Spiroannulation and Selective Ring-Opening Strategy toward γ-Spirolactams.

Org Lett

November 2024

Organic and Medicinal Chemistry Division, Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, 4, Raja S. C. Mullick Road, Jadavpur, Kolkata 700032, India.

A unique and propitious [4 + 1] spiroannulation of 2-aryl-4-benzo[][1,3]oxazine with maleimide has been delineated, furnishing diversely embellished γ-spirolactams featuring pendant benzyl alcohol via Rh(III)-catalyzed consecutive ring closing/ring opening followed by regioselective cleavage of the C4-O bond of 1,3-benzoxazine promoted by an generated water maneuver constructing new C-C, C-N, and C-O bonds at a go. A detailed mechanistic study, including a thorough analysis of the incorporation of an extra oxygen source, has been showcased to make this strategy for structurally orchestrated isoindoline-1-one spirosuccinimides.

A multifunctional rhodamine derivative containing azo-salicylaldehyde (BBS) was designed and synthesized as a colorimetric and fluorescence turn-on probe for the selective detection of copper cations (Cu) and hypochlorite anions (OCl) in aqueous media. In the presence of Cu, the probe BBS exhibited turn-on absorption and fluorescence change at 554 nm and 585 nm, respectively. The binding mechanism of BBS with Cu induces the opening of a spirolactam ring in the rhodamine moiety by the formation of a metal-ligand complex, achieving 10-fold enhancement in fluorescence and quantum yield, along with a binding constant of 1 × 10 M and a detection limit of 2.
