The multistate of chemical species generated by 4'-hydroxy-3,2'-furanoflavylium is similar to that of anthocyanins and related compounds. This furanoflavylium multistate system was fully characterized by UV-visible and NMR spectroscopy, allowing determination of the respective equilibrium and rate constants. In contrast to the multistate generated by flavylium cations derived from anthocyanins and related compounds, the furanoflavylium multistate is characterized by much slower hydration and tautomerization (pyran ring opening-closing). In addition, the isomerization of the chalcones of this system (2'-hydroxyaurones) is extremely slow when compared with anthocyanins. The observed similar order of magnitude for tautomerization and isomerization rate constants leads to peculiar kinetics from the flavylium cation (pH = 1) to the stable -chalcone (higher pH values). The hemiketal appears and disappears during the first stages of the kinetics, which gives the intermediate -chalcone (pseudo-equilibrium). This last species disappears in a much slower process, as fully characterized by H NMR, to give the final -chalcone.

Magnetocaloric Effect for a -Clock-Type System.

Entropy (Basel)

December 2024

Departamento de Física, Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, Av. España 1680, Valparaíso 2390123, Chile.

In this work, we study the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in a working substance corresponding to a square lattice of spins with possible orientations, known as the "-state clock model". When the -state clock model has Q≥5 possible configurations, it presents the famous Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase associated with vortex states. We calculate the thermodynamic quantities using Monte Carlo simulations for even numbers, ranging from Q=2 to Q=8 spin orientations per site in a lattice.

January 2025

Jiangsu Key Laboratory for Science and Applications of Molecular Ferroelectrics, Southeast University, Nanjing, 211189, P. R. China.

Utilizing the correlation among diverse physical properties to facilitate multiplexing and multistate memory is anticipated to emerge as an efficient strategy to enhance memory capacity, achieve device miniaturization, and ensure information security. As an important functional material, ferroelectrics have long been considered as a potential candidate in multistate memory devices. Furthermore, the integration of optical response offers an alternative path to realizing multiplexing features, further enhancing the versatility and efficiency of these devices.

Introduction: Prompt treatment with IV thrombolytics (IVT) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients is critical for improved recovery and survival. Recently, hospital systems have switched to the IVT tenecteplase (TNK) instead of the FDA-approved alteplase (tPA) for treatment. Multiple studies and meta-analyses evaluating the efficacy and safety of TNK demonstrate similar or superior outcomes when compared to tPA.

Spin-orbit torque (SOT) is widely considered to be a fast and robust writing scheme for magnetic random-access memories (MRAMs). However, the requirements of field-free switching and high switching efficiency are often incompatible in SOT devices, placing a critical challenge on its improvement. Here we propose that by utilizing biaxial systems the dilemma between high-efficiency and external-field-free SOT switching can be solved intrinsically.

Variational Quantum Algorithm for Non-Markovian Quantum Dynamics Using an Ensemble of Ehrenfest Trajectories.

J Phys Chem Lett

January 2025

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia 22030, United States.

The simulation of non-Markovian quantum dynamics plays an important role in the understanding of charge and exciton dynamics in the condensed phase environment, yet such a simulation remains computationally expensive on classical computers. In this work, we develop a variational quantum algorithm that is capable of simulating non-Markovian quantum dynamics on quantum computers. The algorithm captures the non-Markovian effect by employing the Ehrenfest trajectories and Monte Carlo sampling of their thermal distribution.
