Efficient materials capable of capturing toxic metals from water are widely needed. Herein, a new pyridylpyrazole-β-ketoenol receptor, X-ray diffraction analyzed, was covalently incorporated into the silica surface to produce solid and recyclable adsorbent particles. The new material, fully characterized, revealed extremely efficient removal of toxic metals from water, with a selectivity order of Pb(II) > Zn(II) > Cu(II) > Cd(II). The adsorption was exceptionally rapid at optimum pH and concentrations, showing Pb(II) removal of 93 mg g within 5 min and maximum Pb(II) adsorption of 110 mg g after only 20 min. Sorption isotherms agreed well with the Langmuir model suggesting a monolayer adsorption, whereas kinetics agreed with the pseudo-second-order model suggesting a chemisorption binding mechanism. Thermodynamics of adsorption were fitted with an endothermic and spontaneous process. The material, recyclable for at least five cycles, is therefore promising for the cleanup of water polluted by toxic metals, especially lead.

The acid mine drainage (AMD) is characterized by its highly acidic nature and elevated concentrations of metal ions, thereby exerting significant impacts on both human health and the environment. This study employed a dispersed alkaline substrate (DAS) consisting of thermal activation magnesite and pine shavings for the treatment of AMD. The investigation focused on determining the optimal thermal activation conditions of magnesite, evaluating the effectiveness of the DAS in regulating acidity and removing metal ions from AMD, identifying critical factors influencing treatment efficiency, and conducting toxicity assessment on the effluent.

Fluorinated gases (F-gases) play a vital role in the chemical industry and in the fields of air conditioning, refrigeration, health care, and organic synthesis. However, the direct emission of waste gases containing F-gases into the atmosphere contributes to greenhouse effects and generates toxic substances. Developing porous materials for the energy-efficient capture, separation, and recovery of F-gases is highly desired.

Melatonin increases Pb tolerance in P. ovata seedlings via the regulation of growth and stress-related phytohormones, ROS scavenging and genes responsible for melatonin synthesis, metal chelation, and stress defense. Lead (Pb) is a highly toxic heavy metal that accumulates in plants through soil and air contamination and impairs its plant growth and development.

The accumulation pattern of some inorganic pollutants in quarry sites around Ogun State was modeled using a Fuzzy comprehensive assessment (FCA). Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and naturally occurring radionuclides materials (NORMs) were assessed from soil samples collected from ten quarry sites in three districts (Odeda, Ajebo, and Ijebu Ode) in Ogun State. Three (3) NORMs ( K, U, Th) were assessed using gamma spectrometer with a NaI detector while ten (10) PTEs (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were determined by digestion method using Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer.

The gene GAD1 encodes a glutamate decarboxylase, which is a rate-limiting enzyme for the biosynthesis of endogenous γ-aminobutyrate acid (GABA), but a potential role of GAD1 in regulating cadmium (Cd) tolerance needs to be further elucidated in plants. The objective of this study was to investigate Cd tolerance of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) and transgenic yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) or Arabidopsis thaliana overexpressing AsGAD1. The Cd-tolerant creeping bentgrass cultivar LOFTSL-93 accumulated more endogenous GABA in relation to a significant upregulation of AsGAD1 in leaf and root than the Cd-sensitive W66569 in response to Cd stress.
