We report a simple size focusing, two-step "bottom-up" protocol to prepare water-soluble Au(MBA) nanoclusters, using the three isomers of mercaptobenzoic acids (//-MBA) as capping ligands and MeNBH as a mild reducing agent. The relative stability of the gas-phase multiply deprotonated Au(MBA) ions was investigated by collision-induced dissociation. This permitted us to evaluate the possible isomeric effect on the Au-S interfacial bond stress. We also investigated their optical properties. The absorption spectra of Au(MBA) isomers were very similar and showed bands at 690, 470, and 430 nm. For all Au(MBA) isomeric clusters, no measurable one-photon excited fluorescence under UV-vis light was found, in neither solid- nor solution-state. The two-photon excited emission spectra and first hyperpolarizabilities of the clusters were also determined. The results are discussed in terms of the possible isomeric effect on excitations within the metal core and the possibility of charge transfer excitations from the ligands to the metal nanocluster.

The accurate and sensitive detection of foodborne pathogens is critical for timely food quality supervision and human health. To address this issue, herein, we developed a simple and novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) assay using -mercaptobenzoic acid (MBN)-modified gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and magnetic beads for interference-free detection of (). This assay technique cleverly reduced silver ions (Ag) on the surface of (bacteria@Ag NPs), and the functionalized magnetic beads (capture probes) captured and enriched bacteria@Ag NPs, forming the structure of the capture probes-bacteria@Ag NPs.

Diaryl and di-heteroaryl sulfides exist in the structure of many drugs and important biological compounds, also these compounds are well-known in medicinal chemistry due to important biological and pharmaceutical activities. Therefore, the development of novel, ecofriendly and efficient catalytic systems for the preparation of diaryl and di-heteroaryl sulfides is a very attractive and important challenge in organic synthesis. In this attractive methodology, we wish to introduce FeO-supported 3-amino-4-mercaptobenzoic acid copper complex (FeO@AMBA-CuI) nanomaterials as a novel and efficient magnetically recoverable catalyst for the preparation of heteroaryl-aryl and di-heteroaryl sulfides with high yields through reaction of heteroaryl halides with aryl or heteroaryl boronic acids and S as the sulfur source under ecofriendly conditions.

We report spectroscopic measurements of the local pH and p at an electrode/electrolyte interface using surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA). In acidic and basic solutions, the protonated and deprotonated carboxyl functional groups at the electrode surface exist in the solution as -COOH and -COO, which have different Raman active vibrational features at around 1697 and 1414 cm, respectively. In pH neutral water, as the applied electrochemical potential is varied from negative to positive, the acidic form of the 4-MBA (, -COOH) decreases in Raman intensity and the basic form (, -COO) increases in Raman intensity.

The use of gold nanoparticles/superoxide dismutase (AuNP/SOD) bioconjugates is described as building blocks in SOD biosensor development for the quantification of superoxide in cell culture media. AuNP functionalization with 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) (AuNP and AuNP) was used to improve SOD immobilization through EDC/NHS coupling using their -COOH terminus, leading to the formation of more stable bioconjugates. AuNP and AuNP/SOD bioconjugates were characterized by SEM to determine their size and morphology, UV-Vis for optical properties, FT-IR, and Raman spectroscopies for chemical functional group analysis and EDX for elemental analysis.
