Magnetic ellipsoidal particles adsorbed at a liquid interface provide exciting opportunities for creating switchable functional materials, where self-assembly can be switched on and off using an external field [Davies et al., ., , , 6715]. In order to gain a deeper understanding of this novel system in the presence of an external field, we study the capillary interaction and self-assembly of tilted ellipsoids using analytical theory and finite element simulations. We derive an analytical expression for the dipolar capillary interaction between tilted ellipsoids in elliptical polar coordinates, which exhibits a 1/ power law dependence in the far field (i.e., large particle separations ) and correctly captures the orientational dependence of the capillary interactions in the near field. Using this dipole potential and finite element simulations, we further analyze the energy landscape of particle clusters consisting of up to eight tilted ellipsoids in contact. For clusters of two particles, we find that the side-to-side configuration is stable, whereas the tip-to-tip configuration is unstable. However, for clusters of more than three particles, we find that circular loops of side-to-side particles become globally stable, whereas linear chains of side-to-side particles become metastable. Furthermore, the energy barrier for the linear-to-loop transition decreases with increasing particle number. Our results explain both thermodynamically and kinetically why tilted ellipsoids assemble side-to-side locally but have a strong tendency to form loops on larger length scales.

A new heat source combination, consisting of a uniform body heat source and a tilted double ellipsoidal heat source, has been developed for cold metal transfer (CMT) wire-arc additive manufacturing of Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy. Simulations were conducted to analyze the temperature field and stress distribution during the process. The optimal combination of feeding speed and welding speed was found to be 8 m/min and 8 mm/s, respectively, resulting in the lowest thermal accumulation and residual stress.

Microscopic Analysis of the Water/Glycerol/EO30PS System in Bulk and on a Solid Substrate.

Surfactant systems are often employed in cosmetic formulations where they dry on skin as a surface, thereby becoming increasingly concentrated systems. To better understand this drying process, we focused on the difference of self-assembled structures of the water/glycerol/polyoxyethylene (30) phytosteryl ether (EO30PS) system in bulk and on a solid substrate because the interaction between the substrate and the surfactant may have a substantial effect on the self-assembly, which may be related to the bulk structure but in detail may also differ strongly from the bulk situation. In bulk, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments showed that with increasing loss of water, the degree of ordering increases but changes of the aggregate structure are rather small.

Tunable collective dynamics of ellipsoidal Quincke particles.

Collective behaviors in active systems become dramatically complicated in the presence of chirality. In this study, we show that ellipsoidal Quincke particles driven by an electric field exhibit flexible and tunable chirality because of the tilting of the spinning axis. As the tilting torque decreases with the increase of angular speed, the motion of individual particles transforms from localized circle motion to global rolling.

Observation of vortices and vortex stripes in a dipolar condensate.

Quantized vortices are a prototypical feature of superfluidity that have been observed in multiple quantum gas experiments. But the occurrence of vortices in dipolar quantum gases-a class of ultracold gases characterized by long-range anisotropic interactions-has not been reported yet. Here we exploit the anisotropic nature of the dipole-dipole interaction of a dysprosium Bose-Einstein condensate to induce angular symmetry breaking in an otherwise cylindrically symmetric pancake-shaped trap.

February 2023

Department of Ophthalmology, Guangdong Eye Institute, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences/The Second School of Clinical Medicine, Southern Medical University, No. 106 Zhongshan Er Road, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou, 510080, China.

Introduction: The aim of this work is to investigate the differences in the measurement of foveal retinal thickness in myopic patients between two display modes (1:1 pixel and 1:1 micron) on optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Methods: Horizontal OCT line scan through the central fovea was used for manual measurement of foveal retinal thickness under the two display modes, and the values were compared using Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Correlations between the OCT image tilting angle (OCT ITA) and differences in OCT measurement were analyzed by Spearman's test.
