Facile and innovative route for large-scale synthesis of SiO fibers with excellent textural properties and HO adsorption performance is presented. At first, a three-dimensional network of SiO precursor fibers was produced from tailored spun solutions (without any toxic elements and surfactants) by centrifugal spinning, which is a very modern fiber-synthesis technique, with numerous advantages over electrospinning. Upon thermal annealing of the precursor fibers, mesoporous amorphous SiO fibers with an ultrahigh surface area of up to 824 m/g and pore size distribution in the range of 2-10 nm were produced. Owing to the high number of OH groups available on the surface, the produced SiO fibers showed significantly better performance in HO adsorption compared to that of the reference silicagel.

The escalating demand for sustainable materials has been fueling the rapid proliferation of the biopolymer market. Biodegradable polymers within natural habitats predominantly undergo degradation mediated by microorganisms. These microorganisms secrete enzymes that cleave long-chain polymers into smaller fragments for metabolic assimilation.

We present a high-sensitivity curvature and strain Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) fiber sensor based on a configuration of no-core fiber (NCF) and four-core fiber (FCF). We used an optical fiber fusion splicer to directly splice a segment of FCF between two segments of NCF, with both the FCF and NCF made of SiO, where the FCF exhibits multi-path interference characteristics that allow for higher sensitivity. The NCF, with its self-focusing property, excites higher-order modes, which split and transmit it into the four cores of the FCF.

Carbon-fiber-reinforced carbon and silicon carbide (C/C-SiC) composites were prepared using chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) combined with reactive melt infiltration (RMI). The microstructure and flexural properties of C/C-SiC composites after oxidation in different temperature water vapor environments were studied. The results indicate that the difficulty of oxidation in water vapor can be ranked from easy to difficult in the following order: carbon fiber (CF), pyrolytic carbon (PyC), and ceramic phase.

Addressing the concurrent repair of cartilage and subchondral bone presents a significant challenge yet is crucial for the effective treatment of severe joint injuries. This study introduces a novel biodegradable composite scaffold, integrating piezoelectric poly-l-lactic acid (pPLLA) with strontium-enriched silicate bioceramic (SrSiO). This innovative scaffold continually releases bioactive Sr and SiO ions while generating an electrical charge under low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) stimulation, a clinically recognized method.
