We advance the concept that a single efficient antenna ligand substituted in or added to an otherwise weakly luminescent europium complex is enough to significantly boost its luminescence. Our results, on the basis of photophysical measurements on 5 novel europium complexes and 15 known ones, point in the direction that ligand dissimilarity and ligand diversity are all concepts that clearly play a fundamental role in the luminescence of europium complexes. We show that it is important that a symmetry breaker ligand exists in the complex to enhance ligand dissimilarity and ligand diversity, all mainly affecting the nonradiative decay rate by reducing it. Because the presence of at least one antenna ligand is also obviously necessary, the optimal and the most cost-effective situation can be achieved by adding a single coordination symmetry breaker that is also an efficient antenna, such as 1-(2-thenoyl)-3,3,3-trifluoroacetone or 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione. In such cases the quantum efficiency, η, is decidedly boosted, as can be verified by going from complex [EuCl(TPPO)]Cl·3HO with η = 0% to the novel complex [EuCl(BTFA)(TPPO)], where TPPO stands for triphenylphosphine oxide, with η = 62%.

A sensitized dual-response ratiometric fluorescent sensor integrated smartphone platform for accurate discrimination and detection of tetracycline (TC) homologues was fabricated based on N-CDs-Eu complex. In the sensing system, N-CDs act as a sensitizer of Eu and significantly enhance the fluorescence of TC-Eu complex approximate 40-fold owing to the synergistic effect of antenna effect (AE) and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). A paper sensor integrated with a smartphone platform is further fabricated for on-site measurement of TC.

High-charge micas exhibit improved adsorption properties and are a promising alternative clay material for the engineered barrier in deep geological repositories. When combined with Eu cations, they serve as an in situ luminescent probe for tracking the physical-chemical changes occurring in this engineered barrier over the long term. Therefore, a better understanding of the local environment of the lanthanide is highly desirable to comprehend the specific behavior of these systems.

The nucleotides play multiple fundamental roles that are essential in biochemical enzymatic reactions and signaling pathways. Many diseases are closely associated with their dysregulation. Therefore, reliable and sensitive optical probes to discriminate various nucleotides are essential in biochemistry, drug discovery, and disease diagnosis.

We developed a systematic polarizable force field for molten trivalent rare-earth chlorides, from lanthanum to europium, based on first-principle calculations. The proposed model was employed to investigate the local structure and physicochemical properties of pure molten salts and their mixtures with sodium chloride. We computed densities, heat capacities, surface tensions, viscosities, and diffusion coefficients and disclosed their evolution along the lanthanide series, filling the gaps for poorly studied elements, such as promethium and europium.

Cobalt-based metal-organic framework (MOFs)-derived catalysts are acknowledged for their effectiveness in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the treatment of persistent pollutants. However, the limited adsorption of PMS on the catalyst surface markedly reduces its degradation efficiency. To overcome this limitation, nanoflower-like EuO/CoO-0.
