This study aims to understand the effect of the Domestic Emission Control Area (DECA) policy on ambient SO and particle components in Shanghai. Online single particle analysis and SO measurements from 2015 to 2017 were compared to analyze the long-term variations before and after the DECA policy. Our study showed that there was a significant decrease in SO by 27-55% after the implementation of the DECA policy. The number fraction of ship-emitted particles increased along with the increase in ship traffic activity, but the particles tended to contain lower-vanadium content. The elemental carbon component decreased, while the organic carbon components increased after switching oil. One thousand and ninety four ship fuel oil samples were collected. The oil sample analysis confirmed the ambient particle results; sulfur content decreased in domestic ship heavy fuel oils from 2013 to 2018; in the low sulfur fuel oils used after the DECA policy, vanadium was still highly correlated with sulfur as it was in high-sulfur fuels. Our results suggested that heavy fuel oil is still a major part of the low-sulfur ship oils in use. The multiple-component control including organic pollutants regarding low sulfur fuel oils may be necessary for preventing air pollution from ship emissions.

Teacher-Child Interaction Training-Universal (TCIT-U) is effective for increasing teachers' use of strategies that promote positive child behavior; however, the exact mechanisms of change are unknown. Using a cluster randomized control trial in a sample of 410 racially- and ethnically-diverse children (M = 41.73 months; 50% White, 45% Black/African-American, 4% Multiracial, 1% Asian; 59% Hispanic; 87% with disabilities) taught by 102 teachers from 38 classrooms in eight schools, we attempted to identify these mechanisms of action.

Evaluating long-term reductions in trace metal emissions from shipping in Shanghai.

J Hazard Mater

Function Hub, Thrust of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), 511400 Guangzhou, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Shipping emissions significantly contribute to air pollution in coastal cities, prompting China to implement the Domestic Emission Control Area (DECA) policy in phases, which included stricter low-sulfur fuel mandates.
  • Long-term measurements at Dian Shan Lake showed a 63% decrease in vanadium (V) concentrations after DECA 2.0 was implemented, indicating improvements in air quality.
  • The study emphasizes the need for ongoing monitoring and suggests that nickel (Ni) emissions may come from sources beyond shipping, highlighting the complexity of managing air pollutants.

Monetizing shipping emission reduction: Environmental benefit analysis of domestic emission control areas policy 2.0 in China.

State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science, College of Ocean and Earth Sciences, Xiamen University, 361102 Xiamen, Fujian, China. Electronic address:

Shipping is a major contributor to anthropogenic emissions, exerting complex effects on both the environment and climate. To improve the air quality of coastal areas, China adopted an upgraded policy on domestic emission control areas (DECA 2.0) for shipping in December 2018, which expanded the geographical scope of ECAs from three designated heavy-traffic coastal regions to the entire 12 nautical mile-territorial seas and also introduced more stringent ship emission requirements.

Article Synopsis
  • A two-year study was conducted in Qingdao from November 2018 to January 2020 to analyze trace elements in atmospheric particulate matter (PM) during autumn and winter, focusing on their sources and health risks.
  • The research identified four air quality levels and revealed that concentrations of trace elements, particularly vanadium (V), decreased significantly due to the implementation of the Domestic Emission Control Area (DECA) policy aimed at reducing pollution from ships.
  • Health risk assessments indicated varying levels of non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks associated with elements like manganese (Mn), arsenic (As), and cadmium (Cd), highlighting the need for better pollution management strategies.

Legacy and alternative flame retardants in indoor dust from e-waste industrial parks and adjacent residential houses in South China: Variations, sources, and health implications.

Sci Total Environ

November 2022

The Postgraduate Training Base of Jinzhou Medical University (South China Institute of Environmental Sciences, Ministry of Ecology and Environment), Guangzhou 510530, China; State Environmental Protection Key Laboratory of Environmental Pollution Health Risk Assessment, South China Institute of Environmental Sciences, Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Guangzhou 510530, China. Electronic address:

Many studies have elucidated health concerns of informal e-waste recycling activities, yet few has evaluated the effectiveness of the regulations as well as the human exposure risks to adjacent residents. Herein, legacy polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDs), and alternative organophosphate esters (OPEs) were investigated in indoor dust collected from three e-waste industrial parks and five adjacent villages located in south China. The levels and composition patterns varied significantly between workshop and home dust.
