Article Synopsis
  • - Brugada phenocopy (BrP) is characterized by a Brugada-like ECG pattern and can occur due to various conditions, but it doesn't increase the risk of serious heart issues like Brugada syndrome (BrS) does.
  • - A case is presented of a 69-year-old woman with moderate hyponatremia who exhibited a saddle-back ST-segment elevation on her ECG, which was linked to her liver metastases compressing her heart.
  • - The ECG changes resolved quickly after treating her hyponatremia with sodium chloride, demonstrating that even mild electrolyte imbalances can lead to BrP when compounded by other factors like mechanical heart compression.

[Practical guidance for the implantation of non-transvenous ICD systems].

Herzschrittmacherther Elektrophysiol

September 2024

Abteilung für Elektrophysiologie, Herzzentrum der Uniklinik Köln, Köln, Deutschland.

As an alternative to transvenous ICD systems, two non-transvenous ICD systems have been established in recent years: The subcutaneous ICD (S-ICD), which has been established for several years, has a presternal electrode that is implanted subcutaneously and offers a shock function and, to a limited extent, post-shock pacing. In addition, the extravascular ICD (EV-ICD) has been available in Europe since 2023 which does not require transvenous electrodes and offers the option of providing patients with antibradycardic and antitachycardic stimulation in combination with a conventional ICD function. The lead of this device is implanted substernally.

Performance, body development and ingestive behavior of Nelore and crossbred heifers finished in a grazing system.

Trop Anim Health Prod

January 2024

Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul - UEMS, Rodovia Aquidauana, Km 12, Aquidauana, MS, 79200- 000, Brazil.

The aim of this experiment was to evaluate growth, body development and ingestive behavior of Nelore and crossbred heifers. Twenty-two contemporary heifers (eight Nelore, seven Nelore × Angus (½ Angus) and seven Nelore × Pantaneiro (½ Pantaneiro) crosses) were evaluated. The variables evaluated were weight, subcutaneous fat thickness [assessed by ultrasound in the longissimus dorsi (SFT) and biceps femoris (SFTP8)] morphometric measures and ingestive behavior (determined between 7 am and 5 pm).

Introduction: The extravascular implantable cardioverter defibrillator (EV ICD) has extended projected battery longevity compared to the subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD). This study used modeling to characterize the need for generator changes, long-term complications, and overall costs for both the EV ICD and S-ICD in healthcare systems of various countries.

Methods: Battery longevity data were modeled using a Markov model from averages reported in device labeling for the S-ICD and with engineering estimates based on real life usage from EV ICD Pivotal Study patient data to introduce variability.
