Betaine derivatives are considered major ingredients of shampoos and are commonly used as antistatic and viscosity-increasing agents. Several studies have also suggested that betaine derivatives can be used as antimicrobial agents. However, the antifungal activity and mechanism of action of betaine derivatives have not yet been fully understood. In this study, we investigated the antifungal activity of six betaine derivatives against , which is the most frequently isolated fungus from the human skin and is implicated in the development of dandruff. We found that, among the six betaine derivatives, lauryl betaine showed the most potent antifungal activity. The mechanism of action of lauryl betaine was studied mainly using another phylogenetically close model fungal organism, , because of a lack of available genetic manipulation and functional genomics tools for . Our genome-wide reverse genetic screening method using the gene deletion mutant library showed that the mutants with mutations in genes for cell membrane synthesis and integrity, particularly ergosterol synthesis, are highly sensitive to lauryl betaine. Furthermore, transcriptome changes in both and cells grown in the presence of lauryl betaine were analyzed and the results indicated that the compound mainly affected cell membrane synthesis, particularly ergosterol synthesis. Overall, our data demonstrated that lauryl betaine influences ergosterol synthesis in and that the compound exerts a similar mechanism of action on .

Electrobioremediation is one of the most innovative disciplines for treating organic pollutants and it is based on the ability of electroactive bacteria to exchange electrons with electroconductive materials. Electroactive biofilters have been demonstrated to be efficient for treating urban wastewater with a low footprint; however, their application can be expanded for treating industrial wastewater containing significant concentrations (2.4 %) of commercial surfactants (containing lauryl sulfate, lauryl ether sulfate, cocamydopropyl betaine, and dodecylbenzene sulfonate, among others).

An experiment was carried out in 1985-87 against schistosomiasis using products neutralizing the intermediate stages of schistosomes. In the laboratory, it had been shown that lauryl betaines, amphoteric substances, used for children's shampoos, quickly immobilized miracidiums and cercariae. Studies in Niger in field conditions with water laden with organic matter gave similar results.

Natural biopolymers become increasingly attractive as bio-based alternatives to petrol-based rheological modifiers, especially in personal care applications. However, many polysaccharides exhibit undesired properties in cosmetic applications such as limited viscosifying characteristics, unpleasant sensory properties, or incompatibility with certain formulation compounds. Here, a comprehensive rheological analysis of non-decorated acetan-like heteroexopolysaccharides derived from two Kozakia baliensis strains was performed in selected surfactant formulations.

The efficient extraction recovery of scandium (Sc(iii)) is crucial for its application in high-end technology. Two novel hydrophobic carboxylic acid ionic liquids (ILs), namely, [lauryl betaine][bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl)imide] ([Laur][TfN]) and [cocamidopropyl betaine][bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl)imide] ([Coca][TfN]), were synthesized using two inexpensive amphoteric surfactants as cation sources. [Laur][TfN] (257 °C) and [Coca][TfN] (251 °C) exhibited good thermal stability and strong hydrophobicity.
