Trichloroethene (TCE) bioremediation has been demonstrated at field sites using microbial cultures harboring TCE-respiring whose growth is cobalamin (vitamin B)-dependent. Bioaugmentation cultures grown ex situ with ample exogenous vitamins and at neutral pH may become vitamin-limited or inhibited by acidic pH once injected into field sites, resulting in incomplete TCE dechlorination and accumulation of vinyl chloride (VC). Here, we report growth of the -containing bioaugmentation culture KB-1 in a TCE-amended mineral medium devoid of vitamins and in a VC-amended mineral medium at low pH (6.0 and 5.5). In these cultures, , which can synthesize 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole (DMB), the lower ligand of cobalamin, and are dominant acetogens. At neutral pH, supports complete TCE dechlorination by at millimolar levels with a substantial increase in cobalamin (∼20-fold). Sustained dechlorination of VC to ethene was achieved at pH as low as 5.5. Below pH 5.0, dechlorination was not stimulated by DMB supplementation but was restored by raising pH to neutral. Cell-extract assays revealed that vinyl chloride reductase activity declines significantly below pH 6.0 and is undetectable below pH 5.0. This study highlights the importance of cobamide-producing populations and pH in microbial dechlorinating communities for successful bioremediation at field sites.

The objective of this study was to produce new and renewable bio-based plasticizers from used soybean cooking oil (USCO). First, USCO was completely converted into free fatty acids (FFAs) using lipase from Candida rugosa. Next, these FFAs were enzymatically esterified with benzyl alcohol in solvent-free systems.

In this study, a novel polyacrylate-co-vinyl imidazole hydrogel-supported palladium (Pd) catalyst (P(AA-co-VI)@Pd) was prepared through heat-initiated polymerization, starting with the formation of a complex between vinyl imidazole and palladium chloride, followed by the addition of 75% neutralized acrylic acid (AA), crosslinking agent, and initiator. The structure and morphology of the catalyst were characterized using ICP-OES, SEM, EDX, Mapping, FT-IR, TGA, XRD, XPS and TEM techniques. It was confirmed that the catalyst exhibited excellent compatibility with water solvent and uniform distribution of Pd.

In this work the development of photoactive dressings (PAD) with dual purpose, is presented. These PAD can be used for the topical treatment of persistent infections caused by fungi and bacteria and are also applicable in light antitumor therapy for carcinoma. The synthesized PAD were designed employing conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPN) doped with platinum porphyrin which serve as polymerization photoinitiators and photosensitizers for the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

On February 3, 2023, five train cars containing 887,400 pounds of vinyl chloride, the key building block for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic, derailed and burned, setting off a major environmental health disaster that sickened area residents and first responders, killed wildlife, and contaminated East Palestine, Ohio and surrounding communities. OxyVinyls is the largest vinyl chloride monomer producer in the United States and the third-largest PVC supplier in the United States. How much of this hazardous chemical is transported every year, and how many people are put at risk? To better understand the magnitude of this hazard, we established the most likely rail routes for shipping of vinyl chloride from two OxyVinyls plants in Texas to four PVC factories in New Jersey, Illinois, and Ontario.

This study developed potentiometric sensors for detecting lurasidone HCl (LSH), a vital drug for treating schizophrenia and bipolar I disorder, in pharmaceutical formulations and biological samples. The sensors are based on screen-printed electrodes (SPE) modified with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) synthesized using lurasidone as a template, 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidine (VP) as a functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a crosslinker, and benzoyl peroxide as an initiator. The SPE was further modified with a conductive polyaniline (PANI) film and a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) layer containing MIP as an ionophore and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) as a transducing material along with 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether (2-NPOE) as plasticizer.
