Published: August 2019

Phosphatidylserine is a membrane phospholipid that is localized to the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane. Phosphatidylserine externalization to the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane is an important signal for various physiological processes, including apoptosis, platelet activation, cell fusion, lymphocyte activation, and regenerative axonal fusion. Stabilin-1 and stabilin-2 are membrane receptors that recognize phosphatidylserine on the cell surface. Here, we discuss the functions of Stabilin-1 and stabilin-2 as phosphatidylserine receptors in apoptotic cell clearance (efferocytosis) and cell fusion, and their ligand-recognition and signaling pathways.

Ebola virus (EBOV) causes severe human disease. During late infection, EBOV virions are on the skin's surface; however, the permissive skin cell types and the route of virus translocation to the epidermal surface are unknown. We describe a human skin explant model and demonstrate that EBOV infection of human skin via basal media increases in a time-dependent and dose-dependent manner.

Dengue virus (DENV) causes the most prevalent and rapidly spreading arboviral disease of humans. It enters human cells by receptor-mediated endocytosis. Numerous cell-surface proteins were proposed as DENV entry factors.

: The hepatitis A virus (HAV) cellular receptor 1 (HAVCR1) is a type I integral membrane glycoprotein discovered in monkeys and humans as a HAV receptor. HAVCR1 contains an N-terminal immunoglobulin-like variable domain (IgV) followed by a mucin-like domain (Muc), a transmembrane domain, and a cytoplasmic tail with a canonical tyrosine kinase phosphorylation site. The IgV binds phosphatidylserine on apoptotic cells, extracellular vesicles, and enveloped viruses.

The Role of TIM-1 and CD300a in Zika Virus Infection Investigated with Cell-Based Electrical Impedance.

Biosensors (Basel)

Orthoflaviviruses cause a major threat to global public health, and no antiviral treatment is available yet. Zika virus (ZIKV) entry, together with many other viruses, is known to be enhanced by phosphatidylserine (PS) receptors such as T-cell immunoglobulin mucin domain protein 1 (TIM-1). In this study, we demonstrate for the first time, using cell-based electrical impedance (CEI) biosensing, that ZIKV entry is also enhanced by expression of CD300a, another PS receptor.

Article Synopsis
  • The prevalence of metabolic dysfunction associated-steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is about 32% globally, creating significant healthcare concerns, particularly due to the ineffectiveness of current pharmaceutical treatments.
  • The study developed nanoengineered natural cell membrane-derived nanoparticles (CMNs) loaded with the drug rosuvastatin to target lipid accumulation in liver cells, which is a key issue in MASLD.
  • These CMNs demonstrated superior drug-loading efficiency, enhanced cellular uptake, and a significant reduction in lipid accumulation in liver cells, suggesting their potential as an effective drug delivery system for treating MASLD.
