Medical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) produces high-resolution anatomical images of the human body, but has limited capacity to provide useful molecular information. The light-responsive, liposomal MRI contrast agent described herein could be used to provide an intrinsic theranostic aspect to MRI and enable tracking the distribution and cargo release of drug delivery systems upon light-triggered activation.

The azobenzene moiety is an intriguing structure that deforms under UV and visible light, indicating a high potential for biomedical applications. However, its reaction to UV radiation is problematic because of its high energy and low tissue penetration. Unlike previous research on azobenzene structures in photoresponsive materials, this study presents a novel method for imparting photostimulation-responsive properties to liposomes by incorporating the azobenzene moiety and extending the light wavelength with up-conversion nanoparticles.

Achieving precise spatiotemporal control over the release of proangiogenic factors is crucial for vasculogenesis, the process of de novo blood vessel formation. Although various strategies have been explored, there is still a need to develop cell-laden biomaterials with finely controlled release of proangiogenic factors at specific locations and time points. We report on the developed of a near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive collagen hydrogel comprised of gold nanorods (GNRs)-conjugated liposomes containing proangiogenic growth factors (GFs).

Improvements in cancer treatment are largely influenced by more people knowing about it and developing new ways to diagnose and treat it. New methods such as nanotheranostics and the use of tiny particles have greatly improved the diagnosis, control and treatment of cancer. They have also helped overcome problems with traditional treatments.

In recent years, nanocarriers have played an ever-increasing role in clinical and biomedical applications owing to their unique physicochemical properties and surface functionalities. Lately, much effort has been directed towards the development of smart, stimuli-responsive nanocarriers that are capable of releasing their cargos in response to specific stimuli. These intelligent-responsive nanocarriers can be further surface-functionalized so as to achieve active tumor targeting in a sequential manner, which can be simply modulated by the stimuli.
