For decades, detectives and forensic scientists have relied on friction ridge skin comparisons to identify individuals in criminal investigations. This method involves examining (latent) fingermarks, typically captured as two-dimensional (2D) images, and comparing them with known inked impressions or scans. The comparisons focus on general patterns, the location and orientation of minutiae, and additional characteristics like scars or pores.

The origin of primates has long been associated with an increased emphasis on manual grasping and touch. Precision touch, facilitated by specialized mechanoreceptors in glabrous skin, provides critical sensory feedback for grasping-related tasks and perception of ecologically-relevant stimuli. Despite its importance, studies of mechanoreceptors in primate hands are limited, in part due to challenges of sample availability and histological methods.

Background: Recent advances have increased the importance of the human microbiome, including the skin microbiome. Despite the hand microbiome research, the factors affecting the composition of the hand microbiome and their personal characteristics are incompletely known.
Objectives: Despite changing environmental factors and personal variation, we aimed to indicate the interpersonal distinction between skin microbiota using simple and rapid molecular methods.

Developing new materials that could identify fingerprint using the naked eye and observe the level 3 microscopic details is challenging. Here, we designed a novel hydrochromic and piezochromic dual-responsive optical film, which achieved the visual transparency transition. The performances of hydrochromic and piezochromic responses from high transparency to opaque whiteness were attributed to the introduction of poloxamer.

Forensic laboratories in the United States had an estimated backlog of 570,100 requests for all forensic services at the end of 2014. Latent print requests represented approximately 12% of that total backlog [1, NIJ 2019]. With ever-increasing demands and backlogs, a review of laboratory or section practices becomes vital to operations.
