Participation in youth sport has been promoted as part of a healthy lifestyle, with benefits for physical fitness, social development, and mental wellbeing. Yet, sport carries an inherent risk of injury, which for young athletes may have both immediate and long-term consequences. Amidst significant public debate about the pros and cons of youth sport, this review considers the physiological, psychological, and social factors that inform decisions around youth sport participation. With particular emphasis on growth and maturation, early sport specialization, and injury prevention, it highlights the unique features of the youth sport environment that can influence lifelong musculoskeletal health and physical activity behaviour. Though there have been few robust, longitudinal studies, current evidence suggests that sport has positive effects on child and adolescent wellbeing when maturity status and training load are managed appropriately.

Exercise capacity and the psychosocial effect in preterm born infants - Should we do more?

Paediatr Respir Rev

January 2025

Department of Respiratory Medicine, The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Westmead, Sydney, New South Wales 2145, Australia; Discipline of Paediatrics and Child Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney, Camperdown, Sydney, New South Wales 2006, Australia.

Physical activity is crucial for children's physical, cognitive, and social development, reducing the risk of non-communicable diseases and improving overall well-being. A major legacy of extremely preterm delivery is respiratory limitation with reduced lung function and decreased exercise capacity which can be further exacerbated by inactivity and deconditioning. Strategies to increase incidental physical activities in early childhood and participation in sport and more formal exercise programmes in middle childhood have the potential to optimize cardiopulmonary function, improve quality of life, and foster social interactions in childhood and beyond, thereby providing benefits that extend far beyond the physical domain.

Background/objectives: Adolescent obesity is highly likely to lead to adult obesity and is associated with dietary habits, subjective health, and body image perception. This study aimed to analyze the relationships between BMI, dietary habits, subjective health perception, and body image perception among Korean adolescents using data from the 18th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted in 2022 to explore strategies for reducing adolescent obesity rates.

Methods: Data from 50,427 participants were analyzed, including BMI, seven lifestyle factors (intake frequencies of water, milk, fruit, soft drinks, vegetables, breakfast, and late-night snacks), and responses to one item each for subjective health perception and body image perception.

Antimicrobial Activity of UV-Activated and Cysteamine-Grafted Polymer Foils Against Bacteria and Algae.

Polymers (Basel)

January 2025

Centre for Nanomaterials and Biotechnology, Faculty of Science, University of Jan Evangelista Purkyně, Pasteurova 15, 400 96 Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic.

Surface modification of various polymer foils was achieved by UV activation and chemical grafting with cysteamine to improve surface properties and antimicrobial efficacy. UVC activation at 254 nm led to changes in surface wettability and charge density, which allowed the introduction of amino and thiol functional groups by cysteamine grafting. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed increased nitrogen and sulfur content on the modified surfaces.

Numerical Modelling of Hybrid Polymer Composite Frame for Selected Construction Parts and Experimental Validation of Mechanical Properties.

Polymers (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Material Science and Manufacturing Technology, Faculty of Engineering, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Kamycka 129, 16500 Prague, Czech Republic.

This article is a numerical and experimental study of the mechanical properties of different glass, flax and hybrid composites. By utilizing hybrid composites consisting of natural fibers, the aim is to eventually reduce the percentage usage of synthetic or man-made fibers in composites and obtain similar levels of mechanical properties that are offered by composites using synthetic fibers. This in turn would lead to greener composites being utilized.
