Fifty-five years of radiocarbon variation studies are reviewed with an emphasis on a better understanding of the impacts of the Bohunice nuclear power plant and fossil fuel CO on the atmosphere and biosphere of Slovakia. The maximum ΔC levels in the air up to about 1200‰ were observed during the 1970s at the Žlkovce monitoring station, which after 2005 decreased to <30‰. A relative decrease in the atmospheric ΔC levels due to increasing levels of fossil CO in the atmosphere has also been significant, for example, in Bratislava down to about -330‰, but after 2005 they were only <50‰ below the Jungfraujoch European clean-air level.

For the past few years, short-lived unsaturated halocarbons have been marketed as environmentally friendly replacements for long-lived halogenated greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting substances. The phase-in of unsaturated halocarbons for various applications, such as refrigeration and foam blowing, can be tracked by their emergence and increase in the atmosphere. We present the first atmospheric measurements of the hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) HFO-1336mzz() (()-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene, -CFCH═CHCF), a newly used unsaturated hydrofluorocarbon.

Free-space optical (FSO) communication technologies constitute a solution to cope with the bandwidth demand of future satellite-ground networks. They may overcome the RF bottleneck and attain data rates in the order of Tbit/s with only a handful of ground stations. Here, we demonstrate single-carrier Tbit/s line-rate transmission over a free-space channel of 53.

Non-target screening of secondary organic aerosol compounds in ice cores is used to reconstruct atmospheric conditions and sources and is a valuable tool to elucidate the chemical profiles of samples with the aim to obtain as much information as possible from one mass spectrometric measurement. The coupling of mass spectrometry to chromatography limits the results of a non-target screening to signals of compounds within a certain polarity range based on the utilized stationary phases of the columns. Comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography (LCxLC) introduces a second column of different functionality to enable the analysis of a broader range of analytes.
