Fast-swelling, porous cellulose hydrogels (PCHs) were generated via simple acid treatment of cellulose hydrogel prepared in NaOH/urea medium. Structural characteristics of the PCHs were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Swelling behavior was assessed by measuring the swelling kinetics in deionized water. Mechanical properties were also examined. The results showed that acid treated PCHs had many more micropores, mesopores and macropores, and PCH-6% displayed a high specific surface area of 33.98 m/g. However, cellulose hydrogel without acid treatment had a low specific surface area (2.499 m/g). Mechanical property of hydrogel was found to be slightly deteriorated with the improvement of porous structure. The equilibrium swelling rate of PCHs had drastically improvement after acid treatment. This porous cellulose hydrogel skeleton presents a wide range of possibilities for the further development of fast swelling cellulose-based functional hydrogel.

Introduction: Xanthine oxidase (XO) catalyzes the oxidation of both hypoxanthine and xanthine in the last two steps of the purine metabolic pathway, serving as a rate-limiting enzyme for uric acid production as well as a key target for the treatment of gout and other hyperuricemia-related conditions.
Areas Covered: This paper reviews XO inhibitors in patents from 2021 to the present. We summarize in detail the structural classes and characteristics, in vitro and in vivo biological results, and structure‒activity relationships of synthetic inhibitors, as well as the sources, specific structures, research methods, and biological activities of XO inhibitors from natural products.

At the present stage, great progress has been achieved in understanding the mechanisms of the development of cerebral ischemia. This became possible due to the achievements of theoretical disciplines, in connection with which the general biological approach was formed in the study of pathogenesis of acute and chronic cerebrovascular disorders (CVD). The discovery of pathways of free radical oxidation in cerebral ischemia made it possible to substantiate and develop therapeutic strategies using drugs with antioxidant and neuroprotective activity.

Isoniazid and rifampicin co-therapy are the main causes of anti-tuberculosis drug-induced liver injury (ATB-DILI) and acute liver failure, seriously threatening human health. However, its pathophysiology is not fully elucidated. Growing evidences have shown that fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) play a critical role in diverse aspects of liver pathophysiology.

Background: Recent legislative initiatives in the United States have focused on the medical and legal status of psychedelics, prompting interest in understanding public perceptions of their risks. This study investigates rural-urban differences in the perception of LSD and cannabis risks using national survey data.
Methods: Data from the National Survey of Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) between 2015 and 2021 were analyzed.
