Microplastics (MPs) contamination has been recognized as one of major threats to coastal marine environments. Although studies evidenced severe MPs contaminations to the Pacific Ocean, environmental implications of MPs concentrations, distributions, and characteristics have not been evaluated in sufficient detail. Here, we report on the distribution, abundance, and characteristics of MPs at the surface of the Northwestern Pacific Ocean, from which environmental implications are assessed. A manta trawl with a mesh size of ~330 μm and a rectangular net opening of 0.45 × 1 m was used to collect MPs samples on May 11-June 3, 2018. The MPs samples were sequentially isolated, digested, filtered, and characterized using an optical microscope, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate the heterogeneity in abundance, shapes, color, and sizes of MPs. The study provides strong environmental implications such as sources, environmental degradation, residence time, transportation routes, and biological interactions.

Purpose: The Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Cohort has enrolled over 60,000 children to examine how early environmental factors (broadly defined) are associated with key child health outcomes. The ECHO Cohort may be well-positioned to contribute to our understanding of rural environments and contexts, which has implications for rural health disparities research. The present study examined the outcome of child obesity to not only illustrate the suitability of ECHO Cohort data for these purposes but also determine how various definitions of rural and urban populations impact the presentation of findings and their interpretation.

In this article we consider the theoretical and methodological implications of Deleuzian fabulation for research on recovery from drugs and alcohol as an alternative way of making and doing methods in sociology. The article draws on data produced as part of an ongoing interdisciplinary research collaboration, begun in 2019, with the visual artist and filmmaker Melanie Manchot, social scientists Nicole Vitellone and Lena Theodoropoulou, and people in recovery from drugs and alcohol engaged in the production of Manchot's first feature film STEPHEN. This project attends to the methodological practice of filmmaking as a way of thinking with and alongside colleagues from divergent disciplines about the role of methods, concepts and practices for confronting and resisting processes of stigmatisation.
