Ternary heterostructure nanotubes of InS-CdInS@X(X = Ag, AgPO, AgI) were synthesized with enhanced photocatalytic activity for efficiently degrading pollutants. Electron beam irradiation was employed to artificially introduce interface defects to the heterostructure nanotubes. The experimental results for degrading carmine and Cr under visible light irradiation showed that the photocatalytic efficiency of InS-CdInS was improved to some extent by the introduction of silver compounds. DRS results confirmed that the band gaps of InS-CdInS were reduced to 1.62 eV and 1.58 eV by introducing AgPO and AgI, respectively. Interestingly, the band gap of InS-CdInS@AgI after electron beam irradiation was further reduced to 1.56 eV, resulting in that the degradation time of both Cr and carmine by InS-CdInS@AgI after high-energy electron beam irradiation was shortened to only 5 min. The XRD spectra of the photocatalysts after five cycles could maintain the original crystal form to a large extent. The OH stretching vibration peaks of InS-CdInS@AgI after electron beam irradiation at 3387 cm became wider and sharper, thus indicating that the number of free hydroxyl groups on the heterostructure surface significantly increased. PL results showed that electron beam irradiation could significantly reduce the PL emission peak and enhance the utilization of photogenerated charge carriers. EIS results further confirmed that InS-CdInS@AgI processed by electron beam irradiation had higher photogenerated electron-hole separation efficiency. Based on the experimental results, a feasible reaction pathway and photocatalytic mechanism for the degradation of carmine was investigated. ESR results showed that the main active groups in the whole photocatalytic system were •O and h.

Variable relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of carbon radiotherapy may be calculated using several models, including the microdosimetric kinetic model (MKM), stochastic MKM (SMKM), repair-misrepair-fixation (RMF) model, and local effect model I (LEM), which have not been thoroughly compared. In this work, we compared how these four models handle carbon beam fragmentation, providing insight into where model differences arise. Monoenergetic and spread-out Bragg peak carbon beams incident on a water phantom were simulated using Monte Carlo.

This study aimed to investigate the release of metallic ions from cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloys fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM) for comparison with dental casting. Co-Cr alloys were fabricated via AM using selective laser melting (SLM) and electron beam melting (EBM) in powder-bed fusion. Polished and mechanically ground specimens were prepared.

Hybrid systems consisting of highly transparent channels of low-dimensional semiconductors between superconducting elements allow the formation of quantum electronic circuits. Therefore, they are among the novel material platforms that could pave the way for scalable quantum computation. To this aim, InAs two-dimensional electron gases are among the ideal semiconductor systems due to their vanishing Schottky barrier; however, their exploitation is limited by the unavailability of commercial lattice-matched substrates.

Among the most investigated hypotheses for a radiobiological explanation of the mechanism behind the FLASH effect in ultra-high dose rate radiotherapy, intertrack recombination between particle tracks arriving at a close spatiotemporal distance has been suggested. In the present work, we examine these conditions for different beam qualities and energies, defining the limits of both space and time where a non-negligible chemical effect is expected. To this purpose the TRAX-CHEM chemical track structure Monte Carlo code has been extended to handle several particle tracks at the same time, separated by pre-defined spatial and temporal distances.

Very High-Energy Electron Therapy Toward Clinical Implementation.

Cancers (Basel)

January 2025

Intense Laser Irradiation Laboratory, National Institute of Optics, National Research Council of Italy, 56124 Pisa, Italy.

The use of very high energy electron (VHEE) beams, with energies between 50 and 400 MeV, has drawn considerable interest in radiotherapy due to their deep tissue penetration, sharp beam edges, and low sensitivity to tissue density. VHEE beams can be precisely steered with magnetic components, positioning VHEE therapy as a cost-effective option between photon and proton therapies. However, the clinical implementation of VHEE therapy (VHEET) requires advances in several areas: developing compact, stable, and efficient accelerators; creating sophisticated treatment planning software; and establishing clinically validated protocols.
