[Recurrent myocardial abscess during Streptococcus B endocarditis].

Arch Mal Coeur Vaiss

Clinique cardiologique, Hôpital Broussais, Paris, France.

Published: July 1988

AI Article Synopsis

  • The case study discusses a severe instance of Streptococcus B endocarditis, which can lead to serious heart complications like abscesses.
  • This type of endocarditis is rare and often results in significant damage to cardiac valves and a poor prognosis if abscesses occur.
  • Modern imaging techniques, especially trans-oesophageal echocardiography and CT scans, are recommended for the early detection of cardiac abscesses during this condition.

Article Abstract

The authors report a case of serious streptococcus B endocarditis with a myocardial abscess that recurred after surgery. Streptococcus B endocarditis is a rare disease which is characterized by a pronounced tropism of the organism for cardiac tissues, with severe cardiac valve mutilation and abscess formation in 40% of the cases. A myocardial abscess makes the prognosis worse and must be treated surgically during the acute phase of endocarditis. Modern imaging methods, notably trans-oesophageal two-dimensional echocardiography and computerized tomography should now be used to detect such abscesses.

When acute myocardial infarction meets renal abscess: Case report and literature review.

Medicine (Baltimore)

November 2024

Institute of Gerontology, Guangzhou Geriatric Hospital, Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou, China.

Rationale: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is the leading global cause of death from cardiovascular disease, and the mortality rate increases in the presence of comorbidities such as renal abscess. The treatment of AMI combined with renal abscess is challenging, especially in combination with urinary tract obstruction, as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) can lead to progression of the renal abscess and deterioration of renal function. Currently, there is no consensus on the treatment of renal abscess in AMI.

Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is an opportunistic fungal infection that typically occurs in the immunocompromised host and is associated with severe morbidity and mortality. Myocardial abscess formation is seldomly described. We present a case of IA with purulent myocarditis.

Department of Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, Care Hospital, Exhibition Ground Road, Nampally, Hyderabad, 500001 Telangana India.

Coronary stent infection is considered the rarest complication of percutaneous coronary intervention, occurring in less than 0.1% of the cases. In this article, a case of coronary stent infection and acute stent occlusion with surrounding peri-stent coronary abscess has been reported.

  • Takotsubo syndrome, a rare condition that mimics a heart attack and leads to temporary heart dysfunction, is often overlooked in lung transplant cases, making awareness crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment.
  • A case involving a 54-year-old woman undergoing lung transplantation revealed that she developed severe heart failure during surgery, which was initially misdiagnosed, leading to complications and a prolonged ICU stay.
  • This report underscores the need for better monitoring and recognition of takotsubo syndrome in lung transplant patients, as early intervention is vital for improving health outcomes and quality of life.

Tracheopericardial fistula in lung cancer masquerading as acute myocardial infarction: a case report.

BMC Pulm Med

October 2024

Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Shengli Oilfield Central Hospital, No.31 Jinan Road, Dongying City, 257034, Shandong Province, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Tracheopericardial fistula (TPF) is a rare condition where lung disease forms a fistula between the trachea and the pericardial cavity, causing serious complications like pneumopericardium and potential cardiac issues.
  • A 72-year-old man with recurrent lung cancer presented symptoms such as chest pain and fever, leading to an ST-segment elevation on his ECG that initially resembled a heart attack.
  • Diagnosis was confirmed through advanced imaging techniques and bronchoscopy, highlighting the importance of recognizing TPF to avoid misdiagnosis in similar cases.
