Background: Living with a chronic illness such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) requires medications and therapies, as well as long-term follow-up with multidisciplinary clinical teams. Patient involvement in the shared decision-making process on medication regimens is an important element in promoting medication adherence. Literature review and needs assessment showed the viability of technology-based interventions to equip patients with knowledge about chronic illness and competencies to improve their adherence to medications.

The Cuprizone Model: Dos and Do Nots.

Cells

March 2020

Institute of Anatomy, Rostock University Medical Center, Gertrudenstrasse 9, 18057 Rostock, Germany.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Various pre-clinical models with different specific features of the disease are available to study MS pathogenesis and to develop new therapeutic options. During the last decade, the model of toxic demyelination induced by cuprizone has become more and more popular, and it has contributed substantially to our understanding of distinct yet important aspects of the MS pathology.

AMROBS: All-Metal Replicas of Biological Surfaces-A Novel Approach Combining Established Techniques.

Biomimetics (Basel)

October 2018

Institute for Biomedical Mechatronics, Johannes Kepler University Linz, Altenberger Straße 69, A-4040 Linz, Austria.

Biomimetic work often concerns to biological surfaces and their interaction with the environment. Liquid handling, barrier function and protection against heat, pathogens and predators, to name just a few, require biological surfaces to exhibit specific material properties-properties that often are not suited for specific measurements under lab conditions. In particular, the lack of the necessary sample toughness or conductivity can prove difficult to perform certain experiments.

Analysis of Short-Lived Reactive Species in Plasma-Air-Water Systems: The Dos and the Do Nots.

Anal Chem

November 2018

Research Group PLASMANT, Department of Chemistry , University of Antwerp, Wilrijk , Antwerpen , Belgium BE-2610.

This Feature addresses the analysis of the reactive species generated by nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasmas, which are widely employed in industrial and biomedical research, as well as first clinical applications. We summarize the progress in detection of plasma-generated short-lived reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in aqueous solutions, discuss the potential and limitations of various analytical methods in plasma-liquid systems, and provide an outlook on the possible future research goals in development of short-lived reactive species analysis methods for a general nonspecialist audience.
