Background And Aims: To describe rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgery in a Dublin tertiary referral centre over a 4-year period and to examine factors predictive of surgical and anatomical success.

Methods: A retrospective study was performed by reviewing the surgical log and the charts of patients who underwent a primary retinal detachment repair in a specialist centre over a 4-year period between 2012 and 2015. We excluded exudative and tractional cases. Multiple parameters were recorded including macular status, visual acuity, type of procedure, complications and visual and anatomical outcomes at 6 months post operation. Primary reattachment rate was calculated alongside change in visual acuity. Chi-square testing and analysis of variance were utilized to determine the effect which lens status, macular status, extent of breaks and type of procedure had on outcome and visual success.

Results: A total of 613 primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repairs were performed over the 4-year period. Our primary reattachment rate was calculated to be 88.58% (annual range 85.25-91.30%) with a perioperative complication rate of 2.94%. We noted a statistical significant improvement in VA with a median logMAR VA of 1.0 at presentation to 0.5 at 6 months post procedure. Macular status (chi-square test p = 0.15, X = 2.072) and lens status (chi-square test p = 0.2974, X = 1.086) had no statistical effect on the final anatomical outcome. However, eyes with giant retinal tears were more likely to redetach than those without (chi-square test p = 0.0069, X = 7.3). There was no statistical significant difference in the proportion of eyes achieving visual success by surgery category (one-way ANOVA analysis p = 0.501).

Conclusions: This is the first study of its kind in Ireland and will help surgeons benchmark their results against international standards in the future. Accurate recording of logMAR acuity and intraoperative complications is imperative to assist with prospective studies.

Purpose: Sinusoidal obstructive syndrome (SOS)/veno-occlusive disease (VOD) is a serious complication in hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT) patients. Gemtuzumab-ozogamicin (GO) and InO are known to cause SOS/VOD in leukemic and transplant populations. Due to limited data on ursodiol prophylaxis in non-HSCT patients, we aimed to assess hepatotoxicity, SOS/VOD incidences, time to hepatotoxicity, and confirmed SOS/VOD in adults receiving GO or InO ± ursodiol.

Objectives: The global prevalence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), particularly papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), is increasing. However, studies assessing correlations between these diseases have yielded inconsistent findings. Furthermore, patients diagnosed with HT show a higher prevalence of indeterminate cytology than those without HT.

Background: While stress shielding and adaptive bone changes around the humeral component are often observed after shoulder arthroplasty, the potential causative factors and clinical significance of these findings at mid-term follow-up have not been well elucidated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency, patterns and clinical significance of radiographic findings around the humeral component of total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) and hemiarthroplasty (HA) at minimum 4-year follow-up.

Methods: The 6-week and minimum 4-year radiographs of patients who underwent HA and TSA were evaluated for filling ratios, changes in the humeral bone surrounding the component, and component shift or subsidence.

Background: Ventral hernias are a common but heterogeneous disease. Communication among key stakeholders (eg, patients, clinicians, administrators, payers, and researchers) can be augmented by a widely utilized classification system. The European Hernia Society (EHS) developed an expert-opinion-based hernia classification system organized by hernia type (primary versus incisional) and size.

Objective: Although the efficacy of mepolizumab in reducing exacerbations and oral corticosteroid (OCS) use in severe asthma is well-established, real-world long-term effectiveness data are limited. This study evaluated the real-world impact of mepolizumab treatment in patients with severe asthma over a 4-year follow-up period.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with asthma initiating mepolizumab (index date: first claim, November 2015-September 2019) using the Merative MarketScan Commercial and Medicare Databases.
