Solar desalination of seawater is an attractive and environmentally friendly method to solve the long-standing water crisis. However, its efficiency is highly reliant on solar intensity. Additionally, increasing contamination in water makes it difficult to generate clean water through the solo desalination process. To address this, we propose a polydopamine (PDA)-functionalized hybrid material with dual-purpose solar evaporation and contaminant adsorption for highly efficient clean water production in all-weather conditions. The hybrid material is fabricated by polymerization of dopamine onto a commercial sponge in a facile, low-cost, and scalable manner. With excellent light absorption and chelation capabilities, the PDA film coated on sponge acts as both a photothermal material and adsorbent that allow us to achieve clean water production with solar desalination when sunshine and with contaminant adsorption when cloudy or at night. Meanwhile, the solar evaporation and contaminant adsorption of the PDA-sponge are synergized with one another, resulting in the PDA-sponge that is a desirable material with the capability of continuous clean water production in all-weather conditions. The PDA-sponge is also highly recyclable with a high retention rate of evaporation and adsorption efficiency even after 10 cycles. The promising PDA-based hybrid is believed to inspire new strategies for superior water treatment materials.

A prevalent challenge in particulate photocatalytic water splitting lies in the fact that while numerous photocatalysts exhibit outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity in organic sacrificial reagents, their performance diminishes markedly in a Z-scheme water splitting system using electronic mediators. This underlying reason remains undefined, posing a long-standing issue in photocatalytic water splitting. Herein, we unveiled that the primary reason for the decreased HER activity in electronic mediators is due to the strong adsorption of shuttle ions on cocatalyst surfaces, which inhibits the initial proton reduction and results in a severe backward reaction of the oxidized shuttle ions.

Plastic contamination is a major issue for marine ecosystems, with macro-litter posing a growing threat globally. This study assesses macro-marine litter on Vung Tau beaches, Southern Vietnam, providing baseline data for marine litter pollution and identifying critical action plans for plastic control. Survey results showed litter density ranging from 0.

Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are governed by a cluster of unhealthy behaviours and their determinants, like tobacco and alcohol, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, overweight and obesity, pollution (air, water, and soil), and stress. Regulation of these unhealthy behaviours plays a crucial role in blood pressure control among individuals on hypertensive treatment, especially those suffering from uncontrolled hypertension. Hence, the present study aims at identifying the unhealthy behaviours associated with uncontrolled hypertension.

Saturn's rings have been estimated to be as young as about 100 to 400 million years old according to the hypothesis that non-icy micrometeoroid bombardment acts to darken the rings over time and the Cassini observation indicated that the ring particles appear to be relatively clean. These young age estimates assume that the rings formed out of pure water ice particles with a high accretion efficiency of impacting non-icy micrometeoroid material ( ≳ 10%). Here we show, using numerical simulations of hypervelocity micrometeoroid impacts on a ring particle, that non-icy material may not be as readily accreted as previously thought.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine-metabolic disorder, and multiple factors contribute to its pathophysiology. The current study assessed a PCOS-like animal model induced by consuming a high-fat sugar (HFHS) diet and compared the treatment outcome of mitochondrial-targeted antioxidants versus heat therapy. Sixty rats were divided into the following study groups: three control groups (negative and positive for the treatments used), HFHS, hot tub therapy (HTT) treatment, and MitoQ10 treatment (500 µmol/L MitoQ10 in clean drinking water daily, from week fourteen till week twenty-two of the study).
