Magnetic hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (γ-FeO@HAP) are shown to be a viable sorbent for the preconcentration and adsorption of parabens (specifically of methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butyl-, pentyl-, phenyl- and benzylparaben). The average diameter of the magnetic γ-FeO@HAP nanoadsorbents is 25 nm. The effects of amount of nanoadsorbent, pH value and time of adsorption on the adsorption efficiency were studied by chemometry and optimized using a Box-Behnken design, and the respective response surface equations were derived. The loaded magnetic nanoadsorbent can be removed from the aqueous sample by applying an external magnetic field. Following extraction with acetonitrile, the parabens were quantified by gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. Under optimum condition, the limit of detection (LOD) and adsorption efficiencies of the method are in the range from 5 to 10 μg L and 95-106%, respectively. The preconcentration factors range from 320 to 350. The results demonstrate that this nanoadsorbent can be applied to the removal of parabens from different water, soil, beverage and urine samples. Graphical abstract Schematic representation of ultrasound-assisted solid-phase extraction of parabens from environmental and biological samples by γ-FeO@HAP nanoadsorbent as a new and effective method with high reproducibility and reusability.

The occurrence of carbonyl compounds and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in adult formulas is a critical issue in product safety and quality. This research manuscript reports the determination of targeted and untargeted carbonyl compounds and VOCs in adult formulas stored at different temperatures (room temperature, 4 °C, and 60 °C) over one month. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was utilized for the sample analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on extracting alginate from solid phase byproducts of fucoidan extraction from brown seaweed using ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) with sodium bicarbonate.
  • The optimal extraction conditions determined included a 69% ultrasound amplitude and a 30-minute sonication time, yielding low molecular weight alginate.
  • Characterization techniques like FTIR, TGA, and DSC indicated that the alginate extracted via UAE had comparable properties to those obtained through traditional methods, indicating its effectiveness and sustainability.

Solid phase extraction (SPE) using traditional column materials offers several advantages, but its ability to simultaneously extract and purify commonly used veterinary drugs, such as chloramphenicol, malachite green, leuco-malachite green and semi-carbazone, remains unproven. Therefore, in the present study, a rapid analytical method based on ultrasound-assisted SPE combined with colloidal gold test strips was developed and applied herein to determine the residues of these veterinary drugs in common aquatic products. Under optimized conditions, the method achieved a limit of detection in the range of 0.

To address the under-researched risk of bisphenols (BPs) in e-cigarette liquids, comprehensive studies have been conducted to propose optimum sample preparation and analysis methods. To determine twelve BPs in refill liquids for e-cigarettes, three sample preparation methods based on distinct operational and working principles were employed. These included fabric phase sorptive extraction (FPSE), ultrasound-assisted solvent extraction of porous membrane-packed samples (UASE-PMS) and solid phase extraction (SPE) utilizing molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) technology.

Ultrasound-Assisted Solid-Phase Affibody Synthesis Using Z as an Example-Superior to the Conventional Protocol?

Pharmaceuticals (Basel)

September 2024

Biomedical Chemistry, Clinic of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University, Theodor-Kutzer-Ufer 1-3, 68167 Mannheim, Germany.

Background: Affibody molecules represent a class of highly specific binders of particular interest for the development of highly affine target-specific radiopharmaceuticals. Their chemical synthesis is, however, intricate due to their considerable length of 58 amino acids; thus, approaches to optimize their preparation are constantly being sought.

Methods: As ultrasound assistance has recently been shown to increase the efficiency of amino acid conjugation during solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), the influence of ultrasonication on the outcome of the SPPS-based preparation of the EGFR-specific affibody Z was compared to a common protocol relying on mechanical shaking.
