Toll like receptors (TLRs) and β-defensins expressed in the endometrium are part of the innate uterine defense mechanism (UDM). In the present study, transcriptional profile of TLRs (1-3, 6-8, 10, and) and β-defensins such as lingual antimicrobial peptide (LAP), tracheal antimicrobial peptide (TAP) and bovine neutrophil beta-defensin 4 (BNBD4) were studied. Bubaline genitalia were collected from abattoir and the endometrium was categorized into one of the following seven groups (n = 7/group) based on cyclicity and endometritis: follicular non-endometritis (FNE), luteal non-endometritis (LNE), follicular cytological endometritis (FCE), luteal cytological endometritis (LCE), follicular purulent endometritis (FPE), luteal purulent endometritis (LPE) and acyclic non-endometritis (ANE). Cytological endometritis (CE) was diagnosed by uterine cytology while purulent endometritis (PE) was diagnosed by the presence of purulent or mucopurulent exudate in the uterine lumen. Real time PCR was performed and the relative fold change was analysed. TLR1 and BNBD4 transcripts were not found in the buffalo endometrium. Of all the innate immune genes studied, upregulation of TLR and β-defensins was mostly contributed by the inflammatory status of endometrium. Further, there was a prominent upregulation of TAP in buffaloes with endometritis. However, no association could be found between the inflammatory status of the endometrium and phase of estrous cycle with respect to the expression of TLRs and β-defensins.

In dogs, the characterization of intraluminal uterine contents has been subjectively carried out by the operators. The aims of this study were: 1) To ultrasonographically describe and compare the echogenicity and heterogeneity of the intraluminal uterine contents in bitches using digital analysis; 2) To assess the cytology of the uterine contents; 3) To evaluate the effect of clinical, ultrasonographic, bacteriological and cytological parameters on intraluminal contents echogenicity and heterogeneity. Twenty-one intact, 3-24 kg, 1-12 years of age, female dogs with ultrasonographically detected uterine content were included.

A remarkable percentage of cows in industrialized dairy farms can be affected by uterine diseases including endometritis. Different viral and bacterial agents are causing endometritis in dairy cows including Trueperella pyogenes, and bovine alphaherpesvirus 1. Also, bovine gammaherpesvirus type 4 (BoGHV-4) is responsible for different reproductive disorders.

To clarify the profile of endometrial cytokines and their relation to inflammation and fertility, mRNA expressions of interleukin (IL)-1α, -1β, -8, -10 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α at weeks (W) 3, 5, and 7 postpartum were compared between Holstein cows without and with cytological endometritis and between early (≤90 days) and delayed (>90 days postpartum) conception cows. IL-1α, IL-1β, and IL-8 expressions at W5 and W7 were significantly higher in cows with cytological endometritis than without. While IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-8, and TNF-α expressions decreased from W3 to W5 in all early conception cows, the percentage of cows decreasing these mRNA was significantly lower in delayed conception cows than early conception cows.

Clinical endometritis (CE) is common in post-partum dairy cows and is associated with impaired reproductive performance. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of subclinical endometritis (SE) in cows clinically cured of CE on their fertility. The study was performed on 215 Holstein Friesian cows with CE diagnosed by vaginoscopy and ultrasound between 21 and 28 days after parturition.
