Our knowledge of Early Jurassic palaeobiodiversity in the upper Elliot Formation of South Africa has increased markedly in recent years with the discovery of new fossils, re-assessments of previously collected material and a better understanding of Stormberg Group stratigraphy. Here, , a new genus of upper Elliot basal sauropodomorph is named on the basis of a complete skull and partial skeleton (BP/1/4779) previously assigned to . It can be distinguished from all other basal sauropodomorphs by a combination of 16 cranial and six postcranial characters. The new species is compared to a small ontogenetic series of as well as to a range of closely related taxa. Taphonomic deformation, sexual dimorphism and ontogeny are rejected as possible explanations for the morphological differences present between BP/1/4779 and other taxa. Osteohistological examination reveals that BP/1/4779 had nearly reached adult size at the time of its death at a minimum age of 10 years.

Orthosuchus stormbergi was a small-bodied crocodyliform, representative of a diverse assemblage of Early Jurassic, early branching crocodylomorph taxa from the upper Elliot Formation of South Africa. The life history of these early branching taxa remains poorly understood, with only sparse investigations into their osteohistology, yet species like Orthosuchus have potential to inform about the macroevolution of growth strategies on the stem leading to crown crocodilians. In order to elucidate the growth patterns of Orthosuchus, we used propagation phase contrast X-ray synchrotron micro-computed tomography to virtually image the osteohistology of the postcrania of two specimens, including multiple elements from the type (SAM-PK-K409), and the femur of a referred specimen (BP/1/4242).

Deuterium labelling of the non-labile protium atoms in starch granules has been achieved for the first time, by growing genetically modified yeast on deuterated media. Mass spectrometry of the glucose monomers from digested starch showed 44 % average deuteration of the non-labile protium when grown on partially deuterated raffinose (with average deuteration 48 %); yielding starch with 26 % average overall deuteration. Non-labile deuteration was also demonstrated using DO solvent in the culture medium.

RAD51 is critical to the homologous recombination (HR) pathway that repairs DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) and protects replication forks (RFs). Previously, we showed that the S181P (SP) mutation in RAD51 causes defective RF maintenance but is proficient for DSB repair.
