Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect over a billion people worldwide. The 2021-2030 NTD road map calls for innovative and highly efficient interventions to eliminate or significantly reduce the burden of NTDs. These include sensitive and cost-effective diagnostic techniques for disease surveillance.

Like other neglected diseases, surveillance data for rabies is insufficient and incompatible with the need to accurately describe the burden of disease. Multiple modeling studies central to estimating global human rabies deaths have been conducted in the last two decades, with results ranging from 14,000 to 74,000 deaths annually. Yet, uncertainty in model parameters, inconsistency in modeling approaches, and discrepancies in data quality per country included in global burden studies have led to recent skepticism about the magnitude of rabies mortality.

[Controlling cystic echinococcosis: outlook in the 21st centuryControle da equinococose/hidatidose cística: perspectivas no século XXI].

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a serious public health problem in South America, one that the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has included in its Plan of Action for the Control of Neglected Infectious Diseases. A logical framework for CE control was defined: this includes establishing the objective to be achieved (eradication or elimination as a public health problem) and determining levels of endemicity which serve as a guide for establishing frequencies of intervention (high endemicity, endemic, and low endemicity, according to rates in the different hosts). There are two validated tools for CE control: systematic deworming of dogs using praziquantel (PZQ) and systematic vaccination of sheep with recombinant EG95 protein, or a combination of both tools.

Exosomes-encapsulated biomimetic polydopamine carbon dots with dual-targeting effect alleviate motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease via anti-neuroinflammation.

Currently, the clinical drugs for Parkinson's disease (PD) only focus on motor symptoms, while non-motor symptoms like depression are usually neglected. Even though, the efficacy of existing neurotherapeutic drugs is extremely poor which is due to the blood brain barrier (BBB). Therefore, a biomimetic polydopamine carbon dots (PDA C-dots) at 2-4 nm was synthesized, while exosomes from macrophages were applied to encapsulate PDA C-dots for improving their BBB-crossing ability and inflammation-targeting effect.

Introduction: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) also known as Kala-azar is one of the neglected tropical diseases (NTD) of public health importance. Despite being a disease of a long history, the condition remains poorly studied especially in East Africa. For instance, whereas, the geographical location of the disease is known, there is a stark paucity of data on the burden, risk factors and clinical outcomes of this contribution in Northeastern Uganda.
