We evaluate here, using synchrotron X-ray reflectivity, hemoglobin adsorption characteristics on silicon substrates with varying chemical functionalities. Hemoglobin at isoelectronic point and at negative charge is immobilized on functionalized hydrophilic (hydroxyl, carboxylic, amine) and hydrophobic (alkylated) silicon surfaces for the study. As a control, the bare cofactor hemin (containing only the metal and porphyrin with no amino acid residues) is also studied under similar conditions. Ordered layers (grown using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique) are observed to be less affected by the surface chemistry compared to the multilayers formed by physical absorption. Surface chemistry and charge of the proteins are critical in controlling the protein adsorption characteristics on silicon, such as thickness (correlated to molecule size) and roughness. In this study, this is very well realized by varying both the hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity of the substrate. The fundamental studies discussed here provide us with a set of important guidelines as to how electrode surface functionalization can control molecular conformation/orientation, especially protein adsorption on the substrate. This in turn is expected to have a significant impact on the protein electrochemical function and response of biomolecular devices.

Objective: Repositioning and fixation of the posterior septal angle (PSA) relative to the anterior nasal spine (ANS) is a well-known maneuver performed during rhinoplasty. Suture techniques through the periosteum along with transosseous drilling through the spine are the two most common fixation methods. We report on how nasal airway patency varies as a function of technique and patient demographic factors.

Booidean snakes are a diverse and widespread lineage with an intriguing evolutionary and biogeographic history. By means of cranial morphology and osteology, this study investigates the evolutionary convergence in the Neotropical genera Boa and Corallus on the one hand and the Malagasy clade comprising Acrantophis and Sanzinia on the other. We hypothesize that the mostly arboreal Corallus and Sanzinia present larger jaws and longer teeth to keep hold of the prey and resist gravity and torsional forces acting on their skull while hanging from branches, while terrestrial genera such as Acrantophis show thinner jaws with shorter teeth because they can rely on the full length of their coils to immobilize and constrict the prey together with a substrate that supports the whole of their body.

A novel proposal is introduced with an unlabeled electrochemical immunosensor for the detection of tumor broad-spectrum biomarker vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF165) Copper-based metal organic frameworks (Cu MOFs)-carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were employed as its substrates, functionalized with methylene blue (MB) for signal enhancement. Cu-MOFs-MWCNTs nanocomposites were synthesized successfully via a solvothermal method and were then deposited on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), with the addition of methylene blue to amplify the signal. Due to the expansive specific surface area provided by the carbon nanotubes and the amino groups facilitated by the metal-organic framework nanomaterials, the anti-VEGF165 monoclonal antibody was immobilized on the electrochemical immunosensor through covalent bonding, which could bind specifically to VEGF165, thereby causing a detectable change in the current.

The ethical issues surrounding sacrifice methods in animal experimentation have garnered increasing attention, making immobilization and sedation an integral part of the sacrifice process for experimental animals. Currently, internationally recognized general sacrifice methods for commonly used laboratory animals have been established, but there remains significant controversy over the sacrifice methods for turtles. To explore the effectiveness of various immobilization methods and their impact on stress-related indicators in turtles, this study used red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) as subjects.

The continuous exposure of chemical pesticides in agriculture, their contamination in soil and water pose serious threat to the environment. Current study used an approach to evaluate various pesticides like Hexaconazole, Mancozeb, Pretilachlor, Organophosphate and λ-cyhalothrin degradation capability of esterase. The enzyme was isolated from Salinicoccus roseus.
