Article Abstract

In order to assess the risk of exposure of human populations to dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and mercury, muscles of five fish species were analysed, along with the surface sediment of 14 Iriri River sampling sites. The fish specimens were sacrificed by the spinal section, prior to sex identification, body weight determination and total length. Considering the fish specimens studied, 11% of them showed concentrations of mercury higher than the maximum established by the World Health Organization for safe human consumption. A positive correlation between fish body weight and mercury concentration was observed, besides a positive correlation between the fish size and Hg concentration. Significant differences ( < 0.05) were found between mean concentrations of DDT and metabolites among species of fish studied. In the species, the highest concentration of total DDT (151.4 ng/g) was found, while in species, the lowest. However, the DDT levels in fish muscle of studied species are below the maximum set by FAO-Alimentarius CODEX. In the sediments, total DDT ranged from 11.58 ng/g to 48.4 ng/g, which is associated with the historical DDT use in the Amazon. According to sediment quality guidelines, these levels have a moderate toxic effect in almost all of the studied region.

Postsynthetic Size Focusing via Digestive Ripening in HgTe Quantum Dots.

J Phys Chem Lett

December 2024

School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering, Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study, University of Chinese Academy of Science, Hangzhou 310024, China.

Size uniformity in colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) critically influences their electronic properties. However, achieving precise size control remains challenging for mercury chalcogenide systems. We demonstrate that a postsynthetic reheating treatment with the addition of dodecanethiol (DDT) ligands, consistent with a digestive ripening mechanism, effectively narrows the size distribution of HgTe CQDs from 12% to 6%, accompanied by enhanced crystallinity and sharper absorption features.

Exposure to Environmental Pollutants and Risk of Diarrhea: A Systematic Review.

Environ Health Insights

November 2024

African Centre of Excellence for Public Health and Toxicological Research (ACE-PUTOR), University of Port Harcourt, PMB, Choba, Nigeria.

This systematic review investigates the association between environmental pollutants and the risk of diarrhea, a critical public health issue, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The review synthesizes findings from various studies that highlight the impact of contaminants such as pesticides, heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), microplastics, and parabens on gastrointestinal health. Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive literature search across databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar yielded 496 articles, of which 11 met the inclusion criteria for detailed analysis.

Evaluation of the Adriatic Sea pollution using mesozooplankton as an environmental indicator.

Chemosphere

October 2024

Department of Human Sciences, Innovation and Territory, University of Insubria, Via Valleggio 11, Como, Italy; One Ocean Foundation, Via Gesù 10, 20121, Milan, Italy. Electronic address:

The Adriatic Sea is an enclosed basin threatened by marine pollution due to its hydrographic features and anthropogenic pressure. Although zooplankton has been worldwide regarded as an immediate warning signal of contamination, limited information is available on the contamination of these organisms at the Adriatic level. Hence, this study provides comprehensive data on the presence and levels of multiple pollutants in zooplankton collected from 46 locations.

Dietary exposure risks of 39 multi-class Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) to the threatened Gangetic dolphins () were investigated in a conservation-priority segment of the Ganga River. Elevated EDCs bioaccumulation was observed across prey fish species, with di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) significantly contributing to the EDC burden. The concentrations of persistent organochlorines in prey revealed a shift from dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to non-dioxin-like PCBs.

Spatial and cumulative organochlorine and mercury exposure assessments in Steller Sea lions of Alaska: Emphasizing pups.

Mar Pollut Bull

August 2024

Institute of Northern Engineering, Water and Environmental Research Center, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Fairbanks, AK 99775, USA; Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation, Fairbanks, AK 99701, USA. Electronic address:

Steller sea lions (SSL) are sentinels for monitoring environmental contaminants in remote areas of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. Therefore, concentrations of several organochlorines (OCs) were measured in blood from 123 SSL pups sampled from 3 regions; the western Aleutian Islands (WAI), central Aleutian Islands (CAI), and the central Gulf of Alaska. Blood, blubber, and milk from 12 adult female SSL from WAI, CAI and southeast Alaska also were analyzed.
