An ideal suture material supports healing, minimizes inflammation, and decreases the likelihood of secondary infection. While there are published recommendations for suture materials in some invertebrates, there are no published recommendations for or any chelicerate. This study evaluates the histological reaction of horseshoe crabs to five commonly used suture materials: monofilament nylon, silk, poliglecaprone, polydioxanone, and polyglycolic acid. None of the materials were superior with regards to holding nor was there any dehiscence. Nylon evoked the least amount of tissue reaction. This work also provides a histopathological description of the soft membrane at the hinge area between the opisthosoma and telson (telson ligament) and comments on euthanasia with intracardiac eugenol.

Effectiveness and Safety of Glue-based Dural Closure in Cranial Surgery: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

J Craniofac Surg

January 2025

Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of TCM Diagnostics, Institute of TCM Diagnostics, Hunan University of Chinese Medicine, Changsha, Hunan, People's Republic of China.

Dural closure is a crucial step in cranial surgery, essential for preventing complications like cerebrospinal fluid leakage, wound infections, and meningitis. Traditional suturing techniques, however, pose challenges such as technical difficulty and the potential for tissue damage. This retrospective study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of a nonsuture dural closure method using medical glue for direct adhesion of a patch to the dura mater.

Background: Extra-articular but severely comminuted distal basal fractures of the proximal phalanx (PP) are rarely reported. Therefore, the aim of this study was to achieve proper union and desirable outcomes using low-profile locking plates/screws. We introduced our own surgical approach and reported the clinical/radiographic outcomes via retrospective case series.

Background: The efficacy of surgical interventions relies on appropriate closure of the surgical site, which should also be devoid of bacteria. Plaque accumulation is a constant challenge that hampers the healing outcome. Sutures used to close the wound serve as reservoirs for microbes, increasing the risk of surgical site infections (SSIs).

Introduction: Following tooth extraction, there is comparatively more bone loss at the buccal aspect at 3 months of healing, which may result in 56% bone loss due to resorption of the bucco-facial ridge contour. In the socket shield technique, a tooth is planned for extraction in such a way that the tooth is sectioned in two halves, a palatal section is removed and the facial part is retained.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with penile defects, whether congenital or acquired, experience significant psychological distress, and the free radial artery forearm flap method has emerged as a preferred technique for reconstruction.
  • A retrospective study over 16 years reviewed various cases, modifying the initial design to enhance urethral function and stability in the procedure.
  • Results indicated that most patients regained sensation and could urinate standing; however, some experienced complications, and aesthetic outcomes varied, highlighting the technique's potential for effective rehabilitation.
